Malang Sarr Leaves RC Lens as Exodus Continues
The doors at RC Lens are revolving at full speed, and another key figure has just stepped through them. Malang Sarr, a cornerstone of last season’s success, has left the club at the end of his contract, confirmed on Tuesday.
His departure is not an isolated story. It is the latest chapter in a summer that is stripping away the spine of a side that only recently touched glory.
Captain Adrien Thomasson has already gone, leaving on a free to join Stade Rennais. Allan Saint-Maximin, brought in on a short-term deal to add flair and unpredictability, has also exited after his contract expired. On the touchline, the architect of it all has moved on too: Pierre Sage, the coach who delivered Coupe de France triumph and a second-place finish in Ligue 1 in his single season in charge, has swapped the Stade Bollaert for the Premier League and Crystal Palace.
Now Sarr follows.
The 30th of June marked the final day of his deal with Lens, closing a chapter that had been vital for the defender’s career. When he arrived in the 2024/25 season after mutually terminating his contract with Chelsea, he came as a player in need of a reset.
He found it in the north.
Under the lights at the Stade Bollaert, the former OGC Nice defender and France youth international rebuilt both rhythm and reputation. Last season alone, he featured 39 times in all competitions, anchoring the back line and playing a central role in a campaign that brought silverware and a return to the top end of the Ligue 1 table.
Across his time at Lens, Sarr amassed 62 appearances. Those numbers tell the story of trust: a player once on the margins, restored to being a regular, reliable presence.
Now that run is over, and Sarr is back on the market, searching for a new club and a new project.
For Lens, the question is more uncomfortable. With their captain gone, their flair signing departed, their cup-winning coach in England, and a key defender moving on, how much more of this core can they afford to lose before the feel-good era slips into something far more fragile?
