Liverpool's Summer Rebuild: Chiesa, Gakpo, and Trincao Moves
Liverpool’s summer rebuild is taking shape on the wings, and it could come with a bold double move.
With Mohamed Salah leaving on a free despite a year left on his deal, Anfield’s touchlines are bracing for a seismic reshuffle. The club’s greatest modern winger is walking away for nothing; he might not be alone.
Federico Chiesa has made his stance clear: he wants out unless new head coach Andoni Iraola can guarantee him a bigger role. Cody Gakpo’s future is no safer. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Liverpool are ready to listen to “important proposals” for the Dutchman, and his name is already being floated in negotiations.
One scenario has Gakpo heading to RB Leipzig as a makeweight in the race for Yan Diomande, the 19‑year‑old Ivorian who has become Liverpool’s primary target for the flanks. The Athletic report that Leipzig now value Diomande at over €130m (£112m), a price that would test most clubs’ resolve. Liverpool’s interest has not cooled. David Ornstein has stated that the Premier League side are in a stronger position than PSG when it comes to personal terms, and talks between the clubs are under way.
But Diomande alone will not cover the exodus if Salah, Chiesa and possibly Gakpo all depart. Liverpool need more than one new winger. They know it.
Trincao emerges as key second pillar
That is where Francisco Trincao comes in.
Correio da Manha recently revealed that Liverpool have been seriously weighing up a move for the Sporting CP winger, and Iraola’s arrival has not altered that stance. The Portuguese outlet described the managerial change as having “done nothing to cool interest” in the 26‑year‑old.
Trincao’s career has taken a sharp upward turn since he left Barcelona and returned to Portugal. His loan spell at Wolves in 2021/22 underwhelmed, but the reset at Sporting has transformed him. Initially joining on loan from Barça, he made the move permanent in 2023 and has since grown into one of the Primeira Liga’s most productive wide players.
Last season he delivered 13 goals and 18 assists in all competitions – 31 direct goal contributions from the left foot that once tempted Barcelona into a major investment. For the second year running, he earned a place in the Primeira Liga team of the season, a nod to both his consistency and his influence in big moments.
Now, Record report that Liverpool are the “closest” club to landing Trincao by triggering his €60m (£52m) release clause. The same report underlines that Liverpool sit “top of the list” of likely suitors this summer.
The plan is clear. Diomande as the marquee statement for the future. Trincao as the ready-made, peak-age reinforcement with end product already proven at a high level.
If Liverpool push both deals over the line, the sight of Salah walking away for nothing will still sting. But the flanks at Anfield would not be empty for long.
