JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United future is hanging by a thread – and this time, it feels like the teenager has made up his mind.
The 15-year-old, one of the most highly regarded attacking prospects in United’s academy, is in Barcelona for talks over a move to the Spanish champions, according to multiple reports in England and Spain. It is the strongest sign yet that Gabriel intends to force through an exit from Old Trafford.
United’s fears over losing the youngster first surfaced publicly on August 13, when TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed the club had growing concerns about keeping him. Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona were all credited with serious interest in the prodigy.
By mid-September, the situation had escalated. On September 15, TEAMtalk reported that Gabriel had formally informed United he wants to leave. Sources said the player has submitted an official notice asking for his academy registration to be cancelled with immediate effect, a move that would make him a free agent just as he turns 16 next month.
That birthday is crucial. Gabriel turns 16 on October 6 and, as Bailey has pointed out, that milestone opens the door to a switch to an EU club such as Real Madrid or Barcelona. The teenager holds an Irish passport, a key detail that would smooth any cross-border move.
In England, though, the picture is far more tangled. Gabriel’s academy registration with United runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. Even with his cancellation request lodged, the club retains the right to challenge it, and ESPN reported this week that United have no intention of tearing up the agreement.
Behind the scenes, United have not been passive. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has claimed the club have been preparing talks to try to change Gabriel’s mind, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally involved in the effort to keep him.
The player’s actions now suggest those attempts are failing.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Manchester Evening News’ Chief Manchester United Correspondent, Tyrone Marshall, revealed on X that Gabriel was in Barcelona for discussions over a move to the Nou Camp. Marshall reported at 3:19pm on September 18 that United will reject the teenager’s request to be de-registered, but warned that the threat of a move on October 6 – which would require FIFA approval – still looms over the club.
Less than half an hour later, at 3:45pm, Marshall added that Gabriel is “closer to Manchester United exit despite club rejecting his request to be de-registered,” confirming the youngster is in Spain and holding talks with Barcelona. Reports there, he noted, suggest Gabriel will secure the EU passport he needs next week.
The story is not confined to Manchester or Catalonia. Madrid-based outlet Marca has also stated that Gabriel is in Barcelona, while journalist Ben Jacobs backed up those claims, writing on X at 3:23pm that the player is in the city for talks. Jacobs underlined that Barcelona and Real Madrid are seen as the leading contenders should Gabriel complete a move abroad.
United, then, are locked into a stand-off with a teenager who appears determined to walk away, a Spanish giant ready to pounce, and a ticking clock counting down to October 6. The question now is not whether Europe’s elite want JJ Gabriel – it’s whether Manchester United can do anything to stop him slipping through their fingers.
