JJ Gabriel's Exit Talks with Barcelona as Manchester United Stand-off Deepens
JJ Gabriel has left Manchester United in limbo – and the country.
The 15-year-old forward has flown to Barcelona for talks as he attempts to force an exit from the club, having already lodged a formal request to cancel his registration with immediate effect, according to the Daily Mail. He left the UK on Thursday, travelling via France before landing in Catalonia.
It marks a dramatic escalation in a saga that has been brewing quietly behind the scenes at Carrington.
From hat-trick high to exile
Gabriel has not trained with United since announcing himself in style on the European stage, scoring a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut. That performance was supposed to be a launchpad.
Instead, it was followed by a shock omission from the squad for United’s 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah, a decision that raised eyebrows inside and outside the academy setup. Since then, the teenager has been frozen out as tensions between player and club have grown.
Barcelona have been circling for some time. The Catalan giants hosted Gabriel on a tour of their facilities in August 2024, a visit that included a meeting with rising star Lamine Yamal. Their interest has not cooled.
They are not alone. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are all tracking the situation, aware that an unusual combination of age, talent and paperwork could open a rare door.
Passport power and a looming birthday
Ordinarily, players from the UK cannot move abroad until they turn 18. Gabriel is different.
He holds an Irish passport, and that dual nationality means he is eligible to join an EU-based club when he turns 16 on October 6. That date now looms large over Old Trafford.
United have so far refused his request to rip up his contract, holding firm on his registration. If they keep that stance, Gabriel will be unable to join another English club this season, even if relations continue to deteriorate.

Carrick: “Making sure he’s OK is the important thing”
Asked about the escalating situation in his press conference on Friday, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick struck a protective tone rather than a confrontational one.
"He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important we don't play anything out here," Carrick said. "With the exposure and scrutiny and everything, you got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything. The situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's OK is the important thing."
The message was clear: United want to be seen putting the teenager’s welfare first, even as a high-stakes tug-of-war unfolds around him.
For now, the stand-off has immediate consequences. Gabriel will miss the Premier League 2 fixture against Brentford on Friday, another game gone in a period where his development has stalled off the pitch as much as on it.
Barcelona, and others, are ready to move once he turns 16 and if an agreement can be reached to sever his current ties. United, for the moment, are refusing to blink.
