Ismail Kartal's Dramatic Resignation from Fenerbahce

Turkish football delivered another surreal night on Thursday, even by its own volatile standards.

Minutes after Fenerbahce’s 1-1 home draw with Roma in the Champions League, head coach Ismail Kartal walked into his press conference and detonated a bombshell. The 65-year-old announced he was resigning from the club “never to return”, saying he was stepping aside “to clear the way for the club”.

It sounded final. It sounded emotional. It sounded like the end.

It wasn’t.

Barely moments later, club president Aziz Yildirim emerged and flatly contradicted his coach. Kartal, he insisted, was going nowhere. “He continues in his role,” Yildirim told reporters, moving quickly to douse the flames before the story could spiral even further.

The president pointed to an ugly flashpoint during the game to explain Kartal’s dramatic outburst. “Some fans threw a bottle at the coach’s head this evening during the game. He is upset about it,” Yildirim said.

The draw with Roma, on another night, would have dominated the conversation: a tense, high-stakes European fixture in Istanbul, a point taken but two dropped at home. Instead, the focus swung entirely to the touchline, where a veteran coach, stung by abuse from his own supporters, tried to walk away on the spot.

The pressure finally told in front of the microphones. The hierarchy, though, moved just as quickly to pull him back from the brink.
