Hafiz Gariba's Rise at Barcelona: First-Team Future Uncertain
Barcelona may be walking into a gruelling 2026/27 season light on centre-backs, but Hafiz Gariba will not be the surprise solution. Not yet, at least.
Information obtained by Barça Universal, via Adrian Sanchez, confirms that Hansi Flick does not currently see the highly rated youth defender as a realistic option for his first-team squad.
That stance holds even as Barça enter a campaign with a demanding schedule and a thin core of central defenders.
A fast riser in the academy
Gariba has been one of the most eye-catching defensive prospects at the club since his arrival.
He earned his first real spotlight at Escuela Marcet, where his performances quickly drew attention from several top Spanish sides. Barcelona moved decisively, winning the race for his signature and bringing him in on a long-term project.
In February 2025, the defender signed a three-year contract with Barça, tying him to the club until 2028. Inside the academy, his progress since then has been a source of real encouragement.
Coaches have been struck by his blend of physique and reading of the game. His imposing frame lets him recover ground quickly when chasing runners, while his anticipation helps him cut out passes and step in for clean interceptions.
That combination has made him a regular for Juvenil A, where he has continued to impress staff and strengthen his reputation as one of the more promising centre-backs in the system.
A missed pre-season chance
This summer looked like it might open the door.
There was genuine optimism that Gariba would be drafted into first-team preparations ahead of the 2026/27 season. He was firmly in the conversation for pre-season training and the chance to feature in early friendlies.
Then illness hit. A fever ruled him out and cost him the opportunity to be involved, including the match against CE Europa.
As Barça’s lack of depth at centre-back became more obvious, his name inevitably returned to the table as a possible internal fix. The idea made sense on paper: a powerful, fast, academy-grown defender already under contract and impressing at youth level.
But that tentative pathway has not turned into a real opening under Flick.
Flick’s hierarchy at centre-back
Inside the first-team group, the picture is clear.
Pau Cubarsi, Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martin are the recognised centre-backs at Flick’s disposal. Jules Kounde can also slot into the middle, but the Frenchman is being used primarily at full-back in the current planning.
With so many matches ahead and so few natural central defenders, Gariba’s situation stands out. His rise has been sharp, his attributes admired, his contract secure.
Yet, based on the information available, Flick is not ready to lean on him at senior level.
For now, Gariba’s battle remains inside the academy walls, waiting for the moment when potential turns into trust.
