Giovanni Reyna's New Chapter at Strasbourg
Giovanni Reyna’s long German chapter is over. The USMNT playmaker has left Borussia Mönchengladbach and signed for Strasbourg, drawing a line under seven turbulent years in the Bundesliga.
From Dortmund prodigy to crossroads
Reyna arrived at Borussia Dortmund from New York City FC’s academy in 2019 as one of the brightest prospects of his generation. He adapted quickly, flashing the kind of creativity and technique that had Europe talking. For a time, he looked like the next big thing out of Dortmund’s production line.
Then the brakes went on.
A succession of injuries cut into his rhythm. Form dipped. Just as he seemed ready to push on, another setback would arrive. The promise never disappeared, but the momentum did.
A loan move to Nottingham Forest in the second half of the 2023/24 season was supposed to jolt his career back to life in the Premier League. It didn’t. The spell in England passed without the reset he needed, and by last summer he had swapped Dortmund yellow for Gladbach green, searching again for a fresh start.
A year that never truly started
That restart never fully materialised at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Reyna, now 23, managed only one goal and one assist in 20 competitive appearances. The flashes were there, the end product rarely was.
Inside the club, there was no doubt about his raw ability. Gladbach head of sports Rouven Schröder summed up the frustration and the regret.
“Gio is an excellent player who unfortunately only showed glimpses of his potential during his year at Borussia and was unable to consistently demonstrate his ability on the pitch due to a number of injuries. We wish him all the best and every success in this exciting challenge in France.”
The word “glimpses” hangs heavy. That was Reyna’s Bundesliga story in miniature.
Still a pillar for the USMNT
While his club career stuttered, his standing with the United States remained strong. Reyna has already collected 43 caps and stayed central to the USMNT’s plans, featuring in all five of his country’s matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026. In that tournament, he produced one of its standout moments for the USA, bending in a stunning outside-of-the-boot strike against Paraguay.
Those international performances underline why clubs keep betting on him. The talent has never been in question.
Across his time with Dortmund and Gladbach, Reyna logged 125 Bundesliga appearances, contributing 16 goals and 13 assists. Not the numbers once forecast for him, but enough to show what he can offer when his body cooperates and his confidence rises.
A new stage in France
Now comes Strasbourg and a different kind of test. A new league, a new environment, a new chance to turn potential into consistency.
Seven years in Germany have given Reyna experience, scars, and a reputation that still carries weight. Strasbourg offers something else: a clean slate.
If he can finally stay fit and string those “glimpses” together, this move might be remembered not as the end of his Bundesliga story, but as the beginning of the career many expected all along.
