Gabby George Set for Brighton Move Ahead of WSL Season

Brighton are closing in on a significant defensive signing, with Manchester United’s Gabby George poised to make the move to the south coast before the Women’s Super League season begins.

The 29-year-old has a year left on her United deal after the club triggered an option in January, a move that ensured any departure would command a fee. Brighton are expected to pay a six-figure sum for the versatile defender, who joined United in 2023.

This is not a squad-filler deal. George wants minutes. Regular, meaningful minutes. Brighton want experience, leadership and a defender comfortable in multiple roles. The fit is obvious.

Her time at United has been relatively short but not insignificant. Across three years, she has clocked more than 50 appearances and was part of the squad that lifted the Women’s FA Cup in 2024, a landmark moment in the club’s women’s history. She leaves, if the move is completed, with a winner’s medal and a sense that her next step has to be about being on the pitch week after week.

Brighton, meanwhile, are not hiding their ambition. Dario Vidosic’s side have already brought in Switzerland captain Lia Walti and midfielder Emilie Joramo from Hammarby, among others. George would add another layer of experience to a squad being quietly, but decisively, upgraded.

Her pedigree is clear. A graduate of Everton’s academy, George played over 100 games for the Merseyside club before heading to Manchester. Those years built a defender who reads danger early, relishes one‑v‑one duels and understands the grind of a long WSL campaign. Three England caps underline the level she has operated at.

For Brighton, seventh in the WSL last season, the pattern is emerging. This is a club trying to move from mid-table respectability to something more dangerous, more disruptive. Bringing in a defender with George’s CV, at 29 and in her prime, is exactly the kind of move that signals intent rather than survival.

The timing matters too. Brighton open their campaign at home to Arsenal on Sunday, 6 September (12:00 BST). Walti could face her former club. If the George deal is wrapped up in time, Vidosic may have another seasoned option to call on against one of the division’s heavyweights.

Brighton are building. George wants to play. If this transfer crosses the line, both ambitions collide in the same dressing room – and the rest of the league will have to decide how seriously to take them.
