FPL GW5 Strategy: Surya's Wildcard vs. Srini's Free Hit

Gameweek 4 left more bruises than boosts. Leeds were the only side to win at home, penalties swung ranks all over the place, and by the end of it both Surya and Srini – the brains behind AllAboutFPL – had reached the same conclusion for GW5: a chip had to go.

One Wildcard. One Free Hit. Two very different rescue jobs.

Surya: Free Hit Fallout to Full Wildcard Reset

GW4: Pain on a Free Hit

Surya went aggressive in GW4. Free Hit active, 78 points on the board, but the week still felt flat.

The Arsenal triple-up call was right in theory, wrong in execution. No David Raya. No Bukayo Saka. Both scored from the spot, both punished non-owners, and the swing was brutal.

On top of that came the Joao Pedro injury concern and a pile-up of smaller fires. The squad wasn’t just untidy. It was broken. So for GW5, Surya ripped it up.

Wildcard activated.

Why Pull the Wildcard Now?

Using a Wildcard before a three-week international break is bold. Risky, even. One injury and the whole structure can wobble.

Surya doesn’t care.

The squad, in his view, needed a structural overhaul, not a couple of transfers. The aim is clear: build a long-term template around a core of premium and value picks:

• Erling Haaland
• Cole Palmer
• Bukayo Saka
• Morgan Gibbs-White
• Double Arsenal defence

To make that work, the Wildcard leans hard into value from teams with strong upcoming fixtures, allowing that spine to sit in place for weeks.

The draft clocks a 91% rating on Fantasy Football Hub’s free AI Team Rating Tool and is projected at 59 points. The numbers back the reset.

Defence and Goalkeepers: Arsenal at the Heart

Double Arsenal defence is non-negotiable for Surya on this Wildcard. Clean sheets, value, and stability.

• Ezri Konsa at 4.5m is the standout value pick.
• Muharemovic and Silva slot in as what Surya calls “DEFCON defenders” – steady, low-ceiling, regular 4-point types who tick over regardless of fixture.
• Munoz is the upside play, with Coventry, Crystal Palace and Ipswich in the next four. He’s there to chase hauls, not just appearance points.

Midfield: Penalties, Creativity, and a DEFCON Gem

The midfield is built around two talismans:

• Saka
• Palmer

Both are on penalties. Both are focal points for their attacks. Both are flexible enough to become Bruno Fernandes around GW11–GW12, when Manchester United’s fixtures turn kinder.

Then there’s Morgan Gibbs-White, who isn’t just passing the eye test. The data is screaming:

• 1st for Big Chances Created (4)
• 5th for xGI (2.57)
• Joint 2nd for Bonus Points (6)
• 11th for FPL points (26)

He offers multiple routes to returns – set pieces, creativity, bonus – and gets Coventry at home in GW5.

King is the budget swing. Three promoted sides in three straight Gameweeks from GW6 to GW8, an advanced No.10 role, and strong attacking positions. Surya is backing this to be the season King finally turns performances into consistent FPL returns.

Vitaly Janelt rounds off the midfield as the eighth attacker and budget enabler. The appeal is simple: he’s busy, involved, and quietly racking up DEFCON scores:

• GW1 – 13 DEFCON
• GW2 – 10 DEFCON
• GW3 – 12 DEFCON
• GW4 – 20 DEFCON

He has a share of corners and set pieces, with eight corners already taken this season, averages 13.75 DEFCON per 90, and has scored twice. At 5.0m and 2.5% TSB, he’s the low-owned DEFCON gem in this build.

Forwards: Haaland, the Data Monster, and a Fixture Punt

Up front, there’s no debate about the first name.

Haaland is locked.

Next to him, Barry becomes the key value striker. Two promoted teams in the next two Gameweeks, 90 minutes nailed, no rotation risk, and elite underlying numbers:

He’s been unfortunate to have just one goal so far, but with those fixtures, Surya is backing the old rule: fixtures breed form.

Wissa completes the frontline with a strong run: HUL (H), COV (A), AVL (H), CRY (A). Two promoted sides, two struggling teams, and no European football for Newcastle means minutes and focus. Garcia is also in contention for that final forward slot, but the decision is still live.

Captaincy: A Tempting Differential, a Relentless Machine

Surya did look at Gibbs-White for the armband. Coventry at home, strong stats, and a 6.1-point projection on Fantasy Football Hub make him an attractive differential captain.

But there’s Haaland.

He tops AllAboutFPL’s GW5 captaincy metrics again, and the risk of fading him with the armband is huge. Surya’s compromise is simple: captain Haaland, let Gibbs-White be the explosive differential through ownership rather than the armband.

Srini: Free Hit Fired Up for GW5

GW4: Missed Swings and Midfield Regret

For Srini, GW4 stung in different ways.

No Pascal Gross. No Liverpool midfield double-up. A Chelsea attacking triple-up that did its job, but didn’t really move the needle because so many managers owned the same assets.

The real damage came from the same names that hurt Surya: no Saka, no Raya. Another massive swing. Another rank drop.

So Srini reaches for his own emergency button.

Free Hit active for GW5.

Why Free Hit Now?

Srini sees a Gameweek lined with home bankers and soft targets. The Free Hit is his chance to load up on teams with plum fixtures against promoted or struggling sides:

• Forest vs Coventry (H)
• Newcastle vs Hull (H)
• Leeds vs Crystal Palace (H)
• Manchester City vs Sunderland (H)

The Joao Pedro situation only sharpened the decision. Xabi Alonso’s update was vague: no one ruled out, final decision late, and the possibility Pedro plays the club game but not for Brazil. The expectation is he likely misses GW5, recovers over the international break, and could return for GW6.

With Pedro doubtful and his squad not set up to fully exploit those home fixtures, Srini commits to the Free Hit. Only two or three players from his original team even survive into his GW5 draft.

Core Locks and Flexible Slots

Srini has a clear spine for his Free Hit XI. These names are non-negotiable:

Around them, five spots are still open to variation. He’s exploring several combinations but expects:

• One Leeds defender

He leans strongly towards the draft he has already built, though he admits options one and three in his internal variations are still in play. The final call will come closer to deadline.

Captaincy: No Overthinking This One

With Haaland getting a midweek rest, Srini isn’t interested in being clever.

Haaland at home to Sunderland, with City holding the highest goal-scoring odds of the Gameweek, makes the captaincy call straightforward. When City score, Haaland is usually at the heart of it. The armband stays with him.

Two managers. Two chips burned early. One chasing structure with a Wildcard, the other hunting immediate upside with a Free Hit.

GW5 won’t just shape their seasons. It will decide whether this early aggression becomes a launchpad up the ranks, or a long, nervous wait for the second half of the campaign without those safety nets.
