Flixton FC Denies Jadon Sancho Transfer Rumors Amid Viral Clip
For a few surreal hours, a 10th-tier club in Greater Manchester found itself at the centre of the global transfer rumour mill.
Flixton FC, who usually operate far from the glare of elite football, were suddenly fielding questions about whether they were about to sign Jadon Sancho – the £73 million winger once billed as Manchester United’s next superstar.
They were not. And they’ve now had to say so, loudly and clearly.
Viral clip, wild rumours
The storm began with a simple video.
Sancho, now a free agent after his United contract expired on July 1, has been using Flixton’s facilities to stay fit while weighing up offers from professional clubs around the world. During one visit, he appeared in a clip praising the non-league side’s set-up.
"You've got a nice layout here," he said. "It's my first time around this area, and it's the first time I've seen a nice pitch [in this area] apart from United and City."
That was all it took. The footage spread, the speculation snowballed, and suddenly social media had Sancho dropping from the Champions League stage to step 10 of the English pyramid.
The story ran so far out of control that Flixton’s owner, Christopher Garcia, stepped in with a formal statement to drag it back to reality.
Flixton set the record straight
"Over the past few days, we've seen a number of posts and comments circulating regarding Jadon Sancho's visit to Flixton FC," Garcia said.
"To clarify, Jadon was not on trial with the club and was not involved in any transfer discussions. He simply used our facilities for a private training session to maintain his fitness while preparing for the next chapter of his career.
"We're proud that the quality of our pitch and facilities made Flixton a place where a player of his calibre felt comfortable training, and he is welcome to train at Flixton FC whenever he wishes."
The club did more than just deny. They went out of their way to underline how Sancho behaved while on their turf.
Garcia added: "During his visit, Jadon was nothing but professional, humble, and generous with his time. After completing his session, he happily met with young supporters, posed for photos, signed autographs, and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.
"Jadon is a world-class footballer who has achieved more in the game than most players could ever dream of. He deserves respect for both his accomplishments and the way he conducted himself during his visit, not the unwarranted criticism that has followed."
For Flixton, it was an unexpected brush with the big time. For Sancho, it was another curious subplot in a career that has veered sharply off the path many predicted.
From £73m signing to free agent
When Manchester United paid Borussia Dortmund £73 million for Sancho in 2021, they believed they were buying a winger to define their attack for the next decade. The reality never matched the billing.
Across his time at Old Trafford, Sancho produced just 12 goals in 83 appearances. The move that was supposed to ignite his career instead became a prolonged struggle, his spell at the "Theatre of Dreams" never truly catching fire.
His contract finally expired on July 1, leaving him one of the most high-profile free agents on the market.
Last season brought a measure of redemption. On loan, he helped Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side secure Europa League silverware, contributing across 39 appearances in all competitions. Yet even there, he often played a supporting role rather than starring, starting only 18 of those games.
Now, at 26, he stands at a crossroads.
Real interest, real decisions
The links to Flixton were fantasy. The interest from abroad is not.
Qatari side Al-Rayyan are among the clubs to have made a formal enquiry, offering Sancho a clean slate and a lucrative reset in the Middle East. The Saudi Pro League also looms as a possible destination, with its growing cast of European stars and heavy investment in attacking talent.
A return to the Bundesliga, where he first exploded onto the scene with Dortmund, is another route on the table. Germany is the league that unlocked his creativity once before; it may yet tempt him again.
For now, though, he remains unattached, working alone, keeping sharp on a pitch that normally hosts players with day jobs and weekend dreams.
