  Set the tone early with aggressive, clean tackling and showed composure to turn away from AZ’s press. His night ended too soon after he appeared to pick up an injury in the first half, but while he was on, he gave little away.

  Pinned back more than he would have liked. AZ’s overload down his side meant he rarely bombed forward, yet he handled the defensive workload impressively. Strong in duels, disciplined in his positioning, and stubborn down the left.

  Ran the first half from deep. Sprayed passes over and through the AZ press, switching play and setting the tempo. After the interval, the visitors pushed higher and moved the ball quickly around him, making his job far trickier. Still, his influence in that dominant opening spell was clear.

  Given a brutal assignment against AZ’s rotating midfield and forwards, but he never stopped. Covered huge distances, snapped into challenges, and repeatedly nicked the ball back in crowded areas. Not flashy, just vital.
• Trai Hume – 6/10
  His night was defined by moments rather than a full performance. Curled a decent effort just wide before half-time, then twice went close in quick succession after the break – one low shot saved by the keeper’s legs, a header over from the resulting corner. Outside those flashes, he drifted out of the game.

  From almost villain to undisputed hero. His early error gifted AZ a golden chance, only for Roefs to rescue him. That seemed to jolt him awake. He struck the post after a clever Wilson Isidor cut-back, then broke in behind from a Mukiele pass to force another save. Time and again he picked out runners, lofting precise balls over the top for Brian Brobbey and Isidor that should have produced more. When the decisive moment came, he won the penalty himself and buried it. Created, threatened, dictated. The heartbeat of the win.
• Malick Fofana – 6/10
  Neat when he had the ball, but that was the problem – he didn’t see enough of it in the right areas. Too often found himself receiving possession deep and surrounded, where his sharp touches couldn’t really hurt AZ.
• Wilson Isidor – 7/10
  Led the line with intelligence. Worked the channels, linked well with Le Fée and always looked willing to spin in behind. Set up Le Fée’s shot against the post with a smart cut-back and later lashed a decent chance wide after being flicked through. Lacked the finish, not the movement.

• Dan Ballard – 7/10
  Thrown on for Alderete and immediately locked into defensive mode. Read danger quickly and stepped out to block shots around the box. Helped close the door as AZ chased an equaliser.
• Thomas Meunier – 6/10
  Entered for Hume and then shifted to right-back when Danso went off, adapting without fuss. Solid in both roles, kept his side of the pitch secure and offered an outlet when needed.
• Nilson Angulo – 6/10
  Lively on the left and eager to drive at defenders, but his choices in the final third let him down. The big moment came in stoppage time from a rebound; he had to score. He didn’t.
• Brian Brobbey – 6/10
  Barely involved until stoppage time, then suddenly central to everything. Combined neatly with Le Fée around the box before a defender intervened for a corner, then powered forward from halfway with the goal seemingly at his mercy.
