Eichhorn Transfer: Man City Sparks Bundesliga Battle

The race for one of Germany’s brightest young midfielders is turning into a tug-of-war across three countries – with Manchester City set to make the first decisive move.

City are poised to sign 16-year-old Hertha BSC talent Eichhorn, but he will not be staying at the Etihad. The plan is clear: secure the player, then send him straight out on loan to accelerate his development with regular minutes. Bayer 04 Leverkusen have emerged as a leading candidate to take him, a move that would drop the teenager straight into the intensity of the Bundesliga without handing him directly to a domestic rival.

It would be a clever compromise. Eichhorn would test himself at the top level, but not in the colours of Borussia Dortmund or Bayern Munich – the two German giants who have been tracking him closely and still believe they can hijack the story in the next transfer window.

Dortmund, especially, have been painted as the likeliest long-term destination. Reports in Bild claim the Black and Yellows currently hold “the best chance” of landing his signature, with a meeting between sporting director Ole Book and the youngster said to have significantly strengthened their position. For a club that has built its modern identity on fast-tracking elite prospects, Eichhorn fits the profile almost perfectly.

And yet, the picture is not that simple.

Sport Bild reports that Eichhorn is not fully sold on BVB’s current playing style under coach Niko Kovac. The teenager is understood to lean more towards a future at Bayer Leverkusen or RB Leipzig – two clubs whose aggressive, high-tempo football and clear development pathways for young players have turned them into magnets for rising stars. If City complete the deal and send him to Leverkusen, that preference would be quietly satisfied without closing any doors further down the line.

Bayern Munich, usually the final word in any Bundesliga transfer saga, are watching from a more conflicted distance. According to kicker, there is internal disagreement at Säbener Straße over whether to move for the 21-year-old – a curious note in a saga otherwise centred on his status as a 16-year-old prospect, but one that underlines the mixed views within the club. His talent is widely admired, yet not everyone is convinced the timing or profile is right for Bayern’s current squad build.

Back in Berlin, Hertha BSC are trying to cling to some control of the situation. They have not completely given up on keeping Eichhorn in their shirt for at least one more year. Bild reports that the club’s plan is to cash in next summer via a €12 million release clause, then immediately bring him back on loan for an additional season. It would allow Hertha to bank a significant fee while still benefiting from his presence at the heart of their midfield.

For now, the outlines are clear. Manchester City want him, but only as part of a wider development plan. Leverkusen are ready to be the launchpad. Dortmund and Bayern are circling, each with their own doubts and convictions. Hertha are fighting to delay the inevitable.

The real question is simple: where does a 16-year-old with options at the very top of European football decide he will grow fastest?
