Chelsea's Search for New Head Coach Intensifies with Elite Shortlist
Chelsea have begun making formal contact with leading managerial targets as the club accelerates plans to appoint a new permanent head coach well before the squad reports back for pre-season in early July.
Liam Rosenior’s dismissal last month opened yet another chapter in the club’s turbulent post-takeover era. Now, the hierarchy want the next move to look deliberate, not desperate.
Elite names, no compensation
Andoni Iraola, Xabi Alonso, Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner headline the list of candidates under consideration, with a clear common thread: all are out of work now or set to be free of contractual ties by the end of the season. For Chelsea, that means no compensation fees and a cleaner negotiation.
Glasner will leave Crystal Palace when his contract expires this summer and is understood to be open to remaining in England. Iraola has already confirmed he will depart Bournemouth at the end of the campaign, placing two of the Premier League’s most admired tacticians firmly in play.
Both men are admired at Stamford Bridge. Both fit the club’s preferred profile: front-foot football, strong tactical structure, and experience working within defined sporting-director models.
Palace and Chelsea jostle for Iraola
The immediate tug-of-war surrounds Iraola. Crystal Palace have made the 43-year-old their first-choice candidate to replace Glasner and have already held extensive talks with him. The groundwork at Selhurst Park is advanced.
Chelsea’s interest complicates that picture.
Iraola is taking his time, weighing up his options with Palace and Chelsea on the table. Those close to him also indicate he is prepared to start next season without a club, keeping himself available for any high-profile vacancy that may emerge mid-season. It is a stance that gives him leverage – and injects uncertainty into both clubs’ planning.
Silva’s crossroads
Marco Silva sits at a different kind of crossroads. His Fulham contract expires this summer, and the club have put a three-year offer in front of him to stay at Craven Cottage.
He has options. The Portuguese coach is reported to be attracting interest from abroad, while clubs in Saudi Arabia are also understood to be keen should he decide to walk away from Fulham. Chelsea are monitoring the situation as they weigh Silva’s Premier League pedigree against other stylistic fits on their shortlist.
Familiar faces in the frame
There is also a romantic strand to Chelsea’s search. Former Flamengo head coach Filipe Luis and Como boss Cesc Fabregas – both ex-Chelsea players – have admirers inside the club.
Their inclusion reflects a desire in some quarters to reconnect the modern project with the club’s recent past, though there is no indication yet that either former defender or midfielder has moved ahead of the more established candidates.
Clock ticking toward July
Chelsea want clarity long before the first day of pre-season. The next head coach will be expected to shape a young, expensive squad quickly and align with the club’s long-term recruitment strategy.
The calls have been made. The meetings will follow. Now the question is simple: in a summer packed with managerial movement, who commits to Chelsea’s vision first – and who decides their future lies elsewhere?
