Chelsea’s Calculations
Chelsea’s interest is serious but not straightforward. To fund a move of this size, the club would ideally cash in on players who have not convinced in their first year. Liam Delap is one such name mentioned as a potential departure after an underwhelming debut season at Stamford Bridge.
The numbers matter. With West Ham holding firm on a fee north of €44m, Chelsea’s hierarchy will need outgoings to balance any ambitious move for Fernandes. Yet the attraction is obvious: a dynamic midfielder entering his prime, already acclimatised to the league, available at a time when elite options in that position are scarce.
Arsenal and Manchester United, though, can sell their own visions. Both can point to clear projects and defined roles in midfield. Chelsea’s hope is that Xabi Alonso, at the heart of their sporting project, can make the difference in those conversations.
No Konate, No Distraction
While Fernandes sits high on the agenda, another name can be crossed off. Ibrahima Konate has been linked with several clubs ahead of a possible summer move, but a switch to Chelsea is not on the cards. That removes one defensive subplot and sharpens the focus on midfield reinforcement.
