Bruno Guimaraes is heading for Spain and Newcastle’s training camp, not an Arsenal medical table.
On Sunday, the story seemed set: the Brazil midfielder was tipped to undergo a medical with Arsenal on Monday, the final step in an £80 million move that would have sent shockwaves through the Premier League. By Monday morning, the picture had changed.
Sky Sports reported that Guimaraes was actually flying to La Manga to link up with Newcastle’s pre-season squad. No white coats, no North London unveiling. Just a commercial flight from Brazil to Spain, as agreed with his current club.
According to The Chronicle, Guimaraes had already told Newcastle in July that he wanted to join Arsenal. That intention hasn’t shifted. His travel plans have. The Newcastle captain is now expected to sit down with new head coach Matthias Jaissle at the camp and thrash out what happens next.
Jaissle is already with the players in Spain, even though his official confirmation as Eddie Howe’s successor is still delayed by paperwork. It leaves him walking into a dressing room dominated by one question: is his skipper staying long enough to build around, or merely passing through on the way to North London?
Newcastle, sensing this moment for weeks, had begun sketching out a future without their midfield leader. Recruitment conversations turned to possible replacements, with Inter Milan and Croatia midfielder Petar Sucic among those linked as potential heirs to Guimaraes’ role at the heart of the side.
For now, though, the Brazilian is back in black and white. His return to Newcastle training on Monday echoes that of his international team-mate – and fellow Arsenal target – Vinicius Jr.
Arsenal are preparing a bold move for Vinicius, taking aim at Real Madrid’s star amid a contract stand-off that has left him with under 12 months remaining on his current deal. It is an audacious pursuit: prising a marquee forward from Madrid while simultaneously pushing for Newcastle’s talismanic midfielder.
Yet the clock has not stopped in Madrid’s world either. After Real’s 2-2 friendly draw with Fiorentina in Austria on Saturday, Jose Mourinho made it clear: Vinicius Jr would report back for training on Monday as planned. He would be there alongside Brahim Diaz and new signing Bernardo Silva.
On Monday, the images told the story. Vinicius arrived at Valdebebas as expected, walking into a training complex where, officially at least, nothing has changed.
At Arsenal, plenty still needs to. The champions have made only two signings so far this summer as they gear up to defend their Premier League title. They have spent £34 million on Greek winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and picked up goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free after his departure from Leeds.
Two additions. Two enormous targets.
Guimaraes flying to Spain instead of London does not close the door, but it does underline the scale of Arsenal’s task. To reshape a title-winning squad, they are trying to bend the will of Newcastle and Real Madrid in the same window.
The next decisive move will not come from a rumour or a flight tracker. It will come from what is said behind closed doors in La Manga and Valdebebas – and from how far Arsenal are prepared to go to turn long-standing admiration into two of the biggest deals of the summer.
