Bellamy Out of Burnley Frame as Clarets Seek New Targets
Craig Bellamy will not be the man to lead Burnley’s return bid, with the Wales manager no longer in contention for the vacancy at Turf Moor, according to reports.
The former Premier League forward had made it clear he would not walk away from the Wales job for Celtic, but there had been a sense he could be tempted by Burnley. A club he knows. A squad he helped shape. A project that, on paper, fit his hard-edged, high-intensity outlook.
That prospect has now collapsed. Sky Sports News report that the proposed move has “fallen through”, leaving Burnley to redraw their shortlist and push in a different direction.
The shift is immediate. Burnley are understood to be turning their attention towards Steve Cooper and Rob Edwards, both free agents and both with recent Premier League experience. Edwards was only recently dismissed by Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Cooper’s name has hovered around a number of top-flight vacancies since his exit from Nottingham Forest.
Bellamy’s connection with Burnley ran deeper than a passing link. He served as assistant to Vincent Kompany during the Belgian’s tenure, part of the staff that delivered a swashbuckling promotion before the club’s brief, bruising return to the Premier League. Kompany’s departure to Bayern Munich reopened the door at Turf Moor. Bellamy’s familiarity with the club and its hierarchy made him a natural candidate.
Not anymore.
Burnley now face a crucial appointment. Since the 2021/22 season, the Lancashire club have bounced between the Premier League and the Championship, never quite establishing a firm foothold in the top tier. The next manager will be tasked with ending that yo-yo existence, imposing a clear identity and, above all, keeping the club in the Premier League.
Bellamy stays with Wales. Burnley look elsewhere. The question now is simple: who dares take on one of English football’s most unforgiving rescue jobs?
