Arsenal's Transfer Window: Petit on Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez
Arsenal’s summer window carried its usual cocktail of hope, rumour and frustration, but Emmanuel Petit sees one big near-miss as a blessing in disguise.
The former Gunners midfielder is convinced that, for all his brilliance, Vinicius Junior could have blown apart the dressing-room chemistry Mikel Arteta has spent years constructing.
Petit: Vinicius a “bullet dodged”
Speaking to Boyle Sports, the 1998 World Cup winner did not question the Brazilian’s talent. He questioned the fit.
“I think Vinicius Junior is a really talented player but in terms of his mentality I am not sure he is a good fit for Arsenal. That’s just my opinion.
“I see so many humble players at Arsenal so if you all of a sudden bring in someone who is completely different, it can be a problem, especially with Arteta’s style of management.”
The saga around Vinicius Jr reached boiling point when his contract talks with Real Madrid appeared to stall and Arsenal were said to be quietly confident they could tempt him away from the Bernabeu. As the noise grew, so did Petit's doubts.
He pointed directly to the forward’s recent behaviour as a warning sign, highlighting the flashpoint with former Madrid coach Jose Mourinho in the game between Real Betis and Real Madrid.
“Look at what happened between Vinicius Jnr and Jose Mourinho in the last game between Real Betis and Real Madrid. It reminded me of what happened with Xabi Alonso last season when he didn’t want to shake his hand.
“Vinicius Jr. receives so much stick from the fans, the press and social media but in those moments he is sending the wrong message. I think he is probably a bullet dodged for Arsenal looking at that moment.
“I would have loved to see a player with the talent of Vinicius Jr play for Arsenal but with his mentality and his ego I think it would have made for a really difficult situation to cope with.”
For Petit, the lesson is simple: Arsenal’s culture comes first. Even if it means walking away from one of the most devastating wingers in the game.
Regret over Julian Alvarez
If Vinicius Jr is, in Petit's eyes, the superstar Arsenal were right to avoid, Julian Alvarez is the one that got away.
The 2022 World Cup winner, now at Atletico Madrid after his spell with Manchester City, was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates during the summer. Arsenal wanted a striker with pedigree. Alvarez ticked almost every box. The move never materialised, with the Argentinian reportedly favouring other options.
Petit didn’t hide his disappointment.
“Julian Alvarez is the striker Arsenal need. Why? Because he knows the Premier League.
“He’s such a talented player. He has great movement, great technical skills, and he would perfectly fit the DNA of this Arsenal team in how he plays one touch football. I really like everything about him as a player.
“But obviously he wants Barcelona, and if he didn’t leave Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window, do you really think he’s going to leave that club during the winter transfer window? I wouldn’t be so sure about that.”
The contrast is striking. Where Vinicius Jr represents risk and volatility to Petit, Alvarez looks like a plug-and-play solution: proven in England, tactically intelligent, and aligned with Arteta’s high-tempo, combination-heavy style.
Arteta’s attacking puzzle
Arteta still has a problem to solve up front. The search for a reliable focal point hasn’t gone away, especially after Viktor Gyokeres’ difficult first season in the Premier League.
The club have not stood still elsewhere. Bruno Guimaraes has added steel and creativity in midfield. Ezri Konsa has brought composure and athleticism to the back line. Christos Tzolis has hit the ground running in the attacking rotation. All three have made immediate, visible impacts.
Yet the absence of a ruthless, fully integrated No 9 continues to hang over the project. Arsenal have built a squad full of technicians, leaders and willing runners. They now need someone to finish the moves and carry the burden in the biggest moments.
Petit’s words cut to the heart of Arsenal’s recruitment strategy under Arteta. Talent alone is not enough. The wrong ego, at the wrong time, can wreck a title bid faster than any tactical tweak.
Arsenal chose stability over stardust with Vinicius Jr. They may regret missing Julian Alvarez. The question now is whether they can find a forward who offers Alvarez’s profile without inviting the problems Petit fears – and do it in time to turn this squad into champions.
