Santiago Bueno Joins Club America on Loan

Santiago Bueno’s Wolves chapter has been put on pause – and restarted under the bright lights of Mexico City.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have sent the Uruguay centre-back on loan to Club America until the end of the season, with the Liga MX leaders securing an option to buy as part of the deal.

The move ends a frustrating spell on the fringes for the 27-year-old, who did not play for Wolves at the start of this campaign after being left out of the 25-man Premier League squad.

From Girona to relegation fight

Bueno arrived at Molineux from Girona in August 2023 on a five-year contract, brought in as a long-term piece of Wolves’ back line. Across three seasons he clocked up 70 Premier League appearances, becoming a regular presence in defence.

He produced one of his standout moments last September, rising to score his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham. By the end of last term he had featured 29 times in the league, as Wolves battled unsuccessfully to stay up and slipped into the Championship after eight years in the top flight.

Relegation reshaped the squad. Competition for places hardened. Someone was always going to miss out.

“Our most difficult move”

Technical director Matt Jackson admitted the decision to let Bueno go, even temporarily, was a painful one.

“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” he told Wolves’ website.

Wolves knew some markets would remain open after their own deadline, and that gave them room to manoeuvre once the squad limit bit.

“We were aware that there were open markets which may suit Santi after our deadline, and when we had too many players for the 25-man squad, it was unfortunately him who missed out,” Jackson said.

For Bueno, the solution is Club America: a giant of Mexican football, top of the Liga MX table and chasing silverware again. For Wolves, it is a chance to ease a squad logjam and potentially bank a future fee.

For the defender himself, it is something simpler – a way back onto the pitch, in a new country, with a title race to join.
