Arsenal's Pursuit of Vinicius Jr Before Community Shield

Real Madrid are expected to sit down with the Brazilian this week to thrash out his future. If he refuses to extend, the European champions face a brutal decision: risk losing one of their crown jewels for nothing at the end of the season, or cash in while they still can.
From January, clubs outside Spain – Arsenal among them – can open pre-contract talks with the 26-year-old over a free transfer in the summer of 2027. That prospect alone puts pressure on Madrid’s hierarchy. Lose him now for a huge fee, or potentially lose him later for nothing.
Arsenal, football.london understands, are ready to move if the door opens. They are prepared to break the bank for a player they regard as one of the very best in the world.
Arteta’s ideal weapon
The attraction is obvious. Vinicius Jr is not a theoretical upgrade; his record against English clubs is a live warning.
Across 24 Champions League appearances against Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, he has produced nine goals and 12 assists. He has repeatedly shredded high defensive lines, punished full-backs one-on-one and decided knockout ties with moments of raw, individual quality.
Arsenal have felt that sting too. Vinicius featured in both legs of last season’s quarter-final and scored in the 2-1 defeat at the Bernabeu. Arteta has seen at close quarters how his speed, timing and ruthlessness can swing a contest.
Now imagine that kind of threat in Arsenal colours at Wembley on August 16.
Community Shield as a deadline
The transfer window runs until the start of September, but Arteta’s preference is clear: if Arsenal are to land Vinicius Jr, he would rather it was done before the Community Shield.
On that Sunday at Wembley, the Gunners chase another piece of silverware against Manchester City. It is a statement fixture, the first real marker of the new season. Arteta would love to walk into it with a new world-class forward in tow.
The numbers against City only sharpen that desire. Vinicius has scored four goals and supplied six assists in just 12 meetings with Pep Guardiola’s former side. He knows how to hurt them. He has done it in high-pressure, late-spring nights in Europe; doing it in August at Wembley would not faze him.
That puts a rough clock on Andrea Berta’s work. Arsenal’s transfer chief has around two and a half weeks to find an agreement if this dream scenario is to materialise in time for that showpiece.
Arsenal’s new transfer posture
For now, there is no clarity on whether Arsenal will actually table a bid. The interest is real, the admiration obvious, but the market around a player of this stature is volatile. Madrid’s stance, the player’s wishes and rival suitors will all shape what happens next.
What is not in doubt is Arteta’s intention to be in the room when football’s elite become available.
Two years ago, ahead of a clash with Burnley in February 2024, he was asked about the possibility of signing Kylian Mbappe after the Frenchman told Paris Saint-Germain he wanted to leave. Arteta made it plain that these conversations should always feature Arsenal.
“I’m not. Maybe Edu and the owners are, but I’m not involved until the last stage,” he said when asked if he was personally part of the Mbappe talks.
Pressed on whether the mindset should simply be “why not?”, he didn’t hesitate: “Exactly. Why not? If we want to be the best team, then you need to have the best players, that’s for sure.”
He went further when asked if Arsenal would appeal to a player of Mbappe’s calibre. “The club that we are, I don’t think that’s ever been an issue. Everyone wants to play for Arsenal.
“At least with the players we’ve discussed, they’ve always had a smile on their face when you open the door to that discussion. That’s because of our history and everything we’ve done in the past.”
And then the line that now hangs over any pursuit of Vinicius Jr: “When there is a player of that calibre, we always have to be in that conversation. But it looks in a different way, that’s what I would say.”
Madrid’s dilemma, Arsenal’s opportunity
So the stage is set. Madrid must decide how hard they push to keep a player central to their recent European dominance. Vinicius Jr must weigh his role in the Spanish capital against the prospect of a new challenge, and possibly a staggering free-agency payoff down the line.
Arsenal, watching from north London, sit in that space Arteta demanded: not bystanders, but contenders if a superstar truly comes into play.
If Berta can somehow drag this from intrigue into reality before the Community Shield, Arteta will walk out at Wembley with a forward line that suddenly looks built for the very highest level of competition.
If not, Arsenal may still see plenty of Vinicius Jr this season – just not in the colours they would prefer.
