Arsenal’s Midfield Plan B: Alex Scott Amid Chelsea Interest
Arsenal’s summer blueprint is clear: finish the window with a statement. Bruno Guimaraes sits at the heart of it. Vinicius Jr and Julian Alvarez are also on the dream list, but the Newcastle midfielder is the cornerstone of Mikel Arteta’s ideal rebuild in the middle of the pitch.
Personal terms with Guimaraes are already understood to be in place. Arsenal have done the groundwork with the player. The problem lies on Tyneside.
Newcastle have already brushed aside informal offers of £55 million and £65 million. An official £70 million bid from Arsenal is being lined up, yet the expectation inside the industry is that Newcastle will refuse to budge. They see Guimaraes as non-negotiable.
So Arsenal need a contingency. And they’ve already picked one.
Arsenal’s fallback: Alex Scott
According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have internally “decided” that Alex Scott is the midfielder they will move for if Newcastle hold firm on Guimaraes.
Scott, 22, is not the blockbuster name that Guimaraes is, but he is one of the most coveted young midfielders in the Premier League. Bournemouth know it. So do the clubs circling around him.
Arsenal’s interest, though, is complicated by a familiar rival.
Chelsea ready to raise the stakes
Chelsea have already made their move. A first bid of £64 million for Scott has been rejected by Bournemouth, who are determined to keep him as they prepare for the club’s first ever European campaign.
Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Chelsea remain “very interested” and are weighing up whether to submit a new offer. The London club are not alone in admiring Scott – Pep Guardiola has previously labelled him an “unbelievable player”, while Thomas Tuchel is also known to rate him highly – but Chelsea are the ones currently testing Bournemouth’s resolve.
Bournemouth insist they do not want to sell. They have tried to tie Scott down to a new and improved contract, an offer he has turned down. Publicly, the Cherries are adamant: their midfield jewel is not for sale, not now, not as they step onto the European stage.
But every stance has a breaking point.
The £80m question
Privately, Bournemouth are understood to value Scott at around £80 million. That figure sits well above Chelsea’s opening bid and would force any suitor to make a decision: walk away, or go all in on a player still at the start of his career.
A proposal that hits, or even approaches, that £80 million mark would give Bournemouth a serious choice to make. Keep their best young midfielder and protect their sporting project, or cash in at a peak valuation in a market where elite, homegrown midfielders are priced like strikers.
There is another layer. Scott himself.
Reports from the Evening Standard state that Scott is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge after Chelsea’s initial offer was turned down. He wants the transfer. Bournemouth, for now, do not.
That tension between player ambition and club ambition often decides how these sagas end.
Arsenal, Chelsea and a race that could define a window
For Arsenal, Scott is not the first option. He is the carefully prepared alternative if Guimaraes remains locked away at St James’ Park. Yet if Chelsea push ahead and accelerate talks with Bournemouth, Arsenal’s fallback could disappear before they even get to it.
Chelsea, reshaping their midfield once again, see Scott as a long-term pillar. Arsenal, looking for the final pieces to turn title challenges into titles, view him as a different kind of solution if their primary plan collapses.
Bournemouth, armed with European football and a player under contract, believe they hold the strongest hand. Chelsea are ready to test that belief. Arsenal are watching, waiting on Newcastle and ready to pivot.
At some point, someone will have to blink: Newcastle on Guimaraes, Bournemouth on Scott, or a London giant on the size of its next bid.
