Guimaraes has reported to Newcastle’s pre-season camp in Spain, where, as reported by The Sun, he is expected to hand in an official transfer request to formalise his stance.

The swirl of information has produced competing narratives. Luke Edwards of The Telegraph reported that Arsenal only opened club-to-club talks with Newcastle on Monday.

Fabrizio Romano pushed back firmly.

He stated that discussions between the clubs have been ongoing “for some time”, with several conversations already held and the player’s agents helping to move talks along. Arsenal and Newcastle, he stressed, remain in direct contact over Guimaraes.

Romano has been consistent: Arsenal have “total confidence” they will sign the midfielder, and he describes the deal as “very close”.

The clearest sign of where this is heading may be Newcastle’s own behaviour.

Romano reports that the club have already started work on finding a replacement, with new head coach Matthias Jaissle involved in those discussions. Jaissle is said to be in dialogue with the club’s hierarchy, identifying targets who can step into the void Guimaraes will leave.

Personal terms between Guimaraes and Arsenal have been in place for weeks. The Brazil international is now effectively waiting for the final signatures and the formal green light.
