Alvaro Arbeloa Targets Real Madrid's Cesar Palacios for Fulham
Alvaro Arbeloa is wasting no time putting his stamp on Fulham. And, true to type, his gaze keeps drifting back to Valdebebas.
The Spaniard, freshly installed at Craven Cottage, has identified Real Madrid Castilla midfielder Cesar Palacios as a priority target as he starts to assemble a squad capable of surviving – and perhaps surprising – in the Premier League, according to AS. The request is clear: Fulham’s hierarchy have been asked to explore a deal.
A talent on the move
Palacios is technically still part of Real Madrid’s plans. He has begun pre-season with the first team, training alongside stars he once only watched from the academy pitches. But everyone around the club knows the likely outcome: his immediate future lies away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
The 21-year-old thought that future was already mapped out. Earlier in the summer he reached a verbal agreement with Como, and the move appeared on the brink of completion. Player happy, representatives aligned, project convincing. Then it collapsed before pen ever met paper.
Since that breakdown, the market has circled. FC Porto, Osasuna and others have registered interest, testing the waters without quite diving in. None of those talks has advanced to the point of a definitive agreement.
So Palacios is back at Valdebebas, working, waiting, and weighing up his options with Real Madrid. The decision that comes next could define the next phase of his career.
Arbeloa’s project – and a familiar face
For Arbeloa, this is not a speculative punt on a promising name. It is a calculated move for a player he knows inside out.
He has coached Palacios with Castilla and worked with him around the first team. It was Arbeloa who handed the attacking midfielder his senior debut for Los Blancos in January, a significant show of faith that led to seven first-team appearances across the campaign. Those minutes did not come by accident; they came because Arbeloa trusted his game.
That relationship now underpins Fulham’s interest. Arbeloa believes Palacios can handle the jump, can adapt to the intensity and chaos of English football, and can grow with him in London.
Real Madrid, though, hold the contract. Palacios is tied to the club until 2027, which strengthens their negotiating position but also sharpens the question: if regular first-team minutes are unlikely, how long does it make sense to keep him on the periphery?
All signs point towards an exit. The only real unknown is the destination.
Fulham’s Spanish thread

Standing between Fulham and this wave of youth is Jose Mourinho. Arbeloa’s former mentor has returned to Real Madrid and, for now, wants to keep the cards close to his chest.
Mourinho intends to run the rule over Palacios, Gonzalo Garcia and Mastantuono during pre-season before making any final calls on their futures. Only after that internal audit will Madrid open the door to loans or permanent sales.
That leaves Fulham – and Palacios – in a holding pattern. The interest is real, the relationship is strong, and the fit looks logical on paper. But the green light still has to come from Madrid.
If it does, Craven Cottage could become the next stage for a young Spaniard who has already felt the Bernabeu lights on his back. If it doesn’t, Arbeloa will have to look elsewhere for the creativity he wants at the heart of his new Fulham side.
