Alonso Acknowledges Caicedo Mistake After Chelsea's Loss to Arsenal

Chelsea walked off Stamford Bridge frustrated after a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, and in the aftermath, manager Alonso held his hands up over one key decision: Moisés Caicedo.

The influential midfielder was nowhere near the squad for the London derby, a glaring absence in a game that demanded control in the middle of the pitch. Caicedo had already missed the Premier League opener against Fulham and the League Cup win over Luton Town, his season stuck in neutral while Chelsea tried to manage his fitness.

His long-awaited return finally came against Brighton. It should have been a turning point. Instead, it turned into a warning.

Sent on in the 68th minute for Pedro Neto, Caicedo barely had time to settle. Fourteen minutes later he was hobbling off, the optimism around his comeback evaporating as quickly as it had arrived. Summer signing Valentin Barco came on in his place, and with that, Caicedo’s hopes of facing Arsenal disappeared.

The pressure of the defeat forced clarity. Speaking after the narrow loss, Alonso didn’t try to disguise his role in the setback.

“It is not longer term but it’s about assessing the risk,” he said, as quoted by Metro. “Probably, last week, we took him too early and I don’t want to make the same mistake again.”

That was the key admission. The problem is not expected to keep Caicedo out for months, but Alonso knows he misjudged the timing. Chelsea pushed. They paid.

Even so, he refused to hide behind the injury list. No complaints, no ready-made alibis.

“It’s easy after defeats to talk about the players that you are missing,” Alonso said. “I’m not going to go there, I am happy with the players that we have.

“For sure all the managers need to deal with injuries, with suspensions. To have all the players available for all the games is impossible. But we need [Caicedo and Colwill] because they are top players and with them we are a better team.”

That last line underlined the dilemma. Alonso trusts his squad, but he also knows exactly what he’s missing. Caicedo’s energy, his bite, his control – and Colwill’s presence – tilt tight games. Against Arsenal, those margins mattered.

Now the schedule offers no time for self-pity. Chelsea pivot straight back into domestic cup duty, with Leeds United visiting in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. The question hangs over the tie: does Caicedo feature at all?

Alonso’s tone suggests caution will win this time. The manager has already admitted one mistake with his midfielder. He cannot afford a second.
