Ipswich Town Shows Character Despite Liverpool Defeat

Issa Diop insisted Ipswich Town showed character despite being punished early in their 2-0 defeat by Liverpool at Portman Road on Friday night.

The hosts were rocked inside the opening 10 minutes as Liverpool struck twice, leaving Kieran McKenna’s side staring at a long evening against one of the division’s heavyweights. Ipswich could easily have crumbled. Diop said they refused to.

"It's even harder when it's again Liverpool and a top side like that," the defender told BBC Radio Suffolk, reflecting on the brutal start.

The early goals changed the mood inside the ground, but not in the dressing room. Ipswich regrouped, tightened up and began to work their way into the contest, creating chances of their own and forcing Liverpool to defend for spells rather than simply cruise.

"The good thing is the response after conceding the second goal was good," Diop said. "We stuck together, we reacted well. We could have done better in different ways."

He did not hide from the defensive shortcomings that left them chasing the game so early. For Diop, the lesson is clear: you don’t just move on, you improve.

"You can always do better when you concede goals so we can work on it this week and we will be ready to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday."

Ipswich now turn quickly towards that trip to south London, looking to turn resilience into points. Diop believes the foundations are there.

"We have a good group with good coaching staff so I'm very happy here," he added.

The defeat stung. The response, he insists, will define what comes next.
