Fenerbahce Defeated by Besiktas in Derby Fightback
Fenerbahce walked into the Chobani Stadium expecting a statement derby win. They walked out with a 2-1 defeat, a restless crowd, and a captain demanding an immediate reset.
Skriniar strikes, but lead evaporates
The night had started to script. In the 26th minute, Milan Skriniar reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, smashing Fenerbahce into the lead and igniting the home end. Skriniar, both goalscorer and captain, did not sugarcoat what had happened when he faced the cameras after the final whistle.
"We gave our opponent too much space and played too open," he admitted. "We knew they wanted to create opportunities through counter-attacks. Of course, we cannot continue like this. We simply have to be better."
His frustration was tactical as much as emotional. Skriniar highlighted the lack of compactness, the poor decision-making when pressing, and the failure to manage Besiktas’ counter-attacks despite knowing exactly what was coming. He pushed for a tighter block, smarter pressing triggers, and clearer attacking patterns.
"We need to improve offensively and defensively, especially in terms of remaining compact," he added. "We have to know when to press and when to stay tight, while also generating more options in attack."
On the night, none of that clicked when it mattered. Fenerbahce chased the game in straight lines, relied heavily on hopeful deliveries, and rarely found the kind of incisive combination play that unlocks a set defence.
Roma looming large
There is no time for self-pity. The derby is gone, but the stakes rise again almost immediately.
On Thursday, 10 September, Fenerbahce host Roma at 19:45 in their opening Champions League group fixture. It is the kind of high-profile European night the club craves, but it now arrives with a layer of tension after this setback.
Skriniar has made the demands clear. The question is whether his teammates can turn those words into a performance when Roma walk out under the lights and the margin for error shrinks again.
