Xabi Alonso Addresses Moises Caicedo Injury Concerns After Brighton Match
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso moved quickly to calm fears over Moises Caicedo after the Ecuadorian limped out of their wild 4-3 win over Brighton on Sunday.
Caicedo, only just back from a previous problem, entered in the second half but lasted only a short spell before a knock forced him off, raising immediate concern on the Chelsea bench.
“We hope it is not a new injury, and that it is not more serious than the previous time,” Alonso said afterwards, speaking to Tribuna. The message was clear: concern, but no panic.
He stressed that the midfielder had made the call to come off before things worsened. “He was cautious and decided to stop, and his feeling was not the best, but we have to assess his condition,” Alonso explained.
“It was not more than the previous time,” he added. “He was cautious. His feeling was not the best. It was not something new.”
The suggestion from the coach was that Caicedo had felt familiar discomfort rather than a fresh setback, with medical tests now set to determine how long he might be out, if at all.
Martinez makes instant impression
While Caicedo’s exit cast a shadow, Emiliano Martinez’s debut lit up Alonso’s post-match reflections.
The Argentine goalkeeper, a new arrival at Stamford Bridge, did enough in one chaotic afternoon to convince his manager he will be a major figure in this side.
“I am happy with his first impact. He has this charisma and aura that help him connect with the rest of the team,” Alonso said, highlighting not just the saves, but the presence behind a still-developing defence.
Alonso revealed that Martinez had been pushing to start. “I spoke to him yesterday, we discussed the match, and he felt ready. I do not need to tell him many things for him to put in a good performance. He wanted to keep a clean sheet, but I was happy with his first impact.”
The clean sheet never came in a seven-goal thriller, yet the trust between coach and goalkeeper already looks strong.
Neto’s future left open
If Martinez’s role feels settled, Pedro Neto’s future remains anything but.
The winger shone with “a lot of energy,” as Alonso put it, and was central to Chelsea’s attacking threat against Brighton. But when asked whether Neto would still be a Chelsea player by the time the 2026 summer transfer window closes, Alonso refused to make any promises.
“In football, I do not guarantee anything,” he said. “I was happy with Pedro's brilliance. He played with a lot of energy. And he will be very important this season.”
Those words underline his value in the short term, even as speculation swirls. Recent reports have linked Neto with Manchester City and Saudi side Al-Hilal, with the latter particularly keen to tempt him away.
For now, Alonso is juggling three storylines at once: keeping Caicedo fit, bedding in Martinez, and holding on to Neto. How Chelsea handle that trio could define far more than just the early weeks of their Premier League campaign.
