Wolves' Squad Potential: Aiming for Premier League Return

Mike Taylor believes Wolves may have quietly assembled a squad capable of going straight back to the Premier League – even if it looks nothing like the one supporters imagined at the start of the summer.

The BBC Radio WM commentator sat down with former Wolves striker David Kelly to pull apart the club’s transfer window, with the pair homing in on two big themes: numbers and know‑how.

Wolves have bodies. Plenty of them. A large squad now fills the dressing room, raising the question of how Gary O’Neil will keep everyone involved and aligned over a long, unforgiving Championship season. Depth should help with the relentless schedule, but it can also cloud clarity if roles are not sharply defined.

The bigger doubt circles around experience at this level. Does this group contain enough hardened Championship operators to grind out points on cold midweek nights and survive the inevitable winter dip? Or is it a squad built more on potential than proven promotion nous?

“This might be a promotion squad – the only thing that we can say for the moment is it is not what we were anticipating,” Taylor said, summing up the sense of intrigue around Molineux. “That doesn’t mean it will necessarily be bad. We’ll know that in a few weeks, but it is not what we were expecting. It just isn’t.”

Expectation has given way to curiosity. Now the only verdict that matters will be written on Championship scoreboards between August and May.
