Valverde's Return Date Set by Real Madrid After Injury

Real Madrid will have to do without their captain a little longer.

Federico Valverde has been diagnosed with a grade 3 ankle sprain after a brutal challenge from Kang-in Lee in the derby against Atletico Madrid, the club confirmed earlier today. The tackle cut short his afternoon and has now put his immediate plans on hold.

The initial noise around Valverde’s condition was cautiously optimistic. Early indications suggested only a couple of weeks out, with the hope he could be back right after the international break, in time for the La Liga clash with Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

That scenario now looks distant.

Villarreal return unlikely

Journalist Alberto Pereiro reports that, as things stand, Valverde’s comeback against Villarreal on October 10 is “extremely unlikely”. Inside the club, the idea of rushing him back for that game has effectively been shelved.

Instead, Real Madrid have circled a different date on the calendar.

The internal plan is to have their captain fully fit for the following fixture: the UEFA Champions League trip to face AS Roma on October 14. The medical staff and coaching team want him ready for Rome, not half-cooked for the league meeting with the Yellow Submarine.

If his recovery continues without setbacks, Valverde will board the plane to Italy. Villarreal, for now, looks like a step too soon.

Mourinho’s midfield pillar

The timing of the injury could hardly be worse for Jose Mourinho.

Valverde arrived into this season under a cloud of doubt. His previous campaign had been ordinary by his own standards and ended in controversy after a physical altercation with teammate Aurelien Tchouameni. Questions about his role, and even his long-term future at the club, were not in short supply.

Mourinho’s response was clear: he made Valverde a cornerstone.

The 28-year-old has started all eight of Real Madrid’s matches across all competitions this season, contributing a goal and an assist and wearing the armband as captain. He has anchored the double pivot throughout, the one constant in a midfield Mourinho keeps tweaking around him.

Bernardo Silva, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga — all have taken turns alongside Valverde as the Portuguese coach searches for the right blend. The structure still feels unfinished. Real Madrid often lack control and invention in central areas, a problem that becomes even more glaring when their most reliable midfielder is suddenly in the treatment room.

Now Mourinho must juggle that search without his on-field reference point, at least until Rome.
