The 2026-27 UEFA Champions League roars properly into life on Wednesday, with a heavyweight slate that drags some of Europe’s biggest names back under the floodlights. Liverpool welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield, PSG begin their title defence in Paris, and the (new) Camp Nou stages its first European night as FC Barcelona return to centre stage.

Here’s how the opening clashes shape up.

FC Barcelona vs Feyenoord: Flick’s attack hits Europe

European football is back at the rebuilt Camp Nou, and FC Barcelona arrive looking like a side that has rediscovered its swagger.

Stuttgart vs Viking: Debutants face a volatile host

Stuttgart have already shown both faces this season. A 5-1 hammering at the hands of Bayern Munich to open their Bundesliga campaign, followed by a convincing 4-1 win over Koln. Same club, two very different moods.

They finished fourth in Germany last season, with 22-year-old Moroccan winger Bilal El Khannouss emerging as one of their standout threats. Luca Jaquez is among those unavailable, but Stuttgart still carry enough quality and top‑five‑league experience to control this tie at home.

Across from them, Viking step into the Champions League proper for the first time in their history. They squeezed past Dinamo Zagreb in the playoff phase and arrive as champions of Norway, edging Bodo/Glimt by a single point in last season’s title race. This is not a soft touch. Norwegian clubs have grown more competitive on the European stage.

Viking’s problem is personnel. Veton Berisha and at least two other first-choice starters miss out for their group-stage debut. The occasion is huge, the margin for error tiny.

On squad value, on experience, on home advantage, Stuttgart should have enough. For Viking, this feels like a measuring stick more than a must‑win.

PSG vs Slovan Bratislava: Champions in a funk

PSG return to the Champions League as defending champions, but they do not look like a side basking in glory.

They edged Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup, then stalled. A defeat to Lens in the Trophee des Champions, draws with Rennes and Lille, and a loss to AS Monaco in Ligue 1 have left Luis Enrique managing a group that looks tired and strangely flat to start the year.

The talent, though, is absurd. Ferran Torres arrived from Barcelona in the summer, joined by Ajax’s Mika Godts and Maghnes Akliouche. The real stardust still comes from the front three: Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian, one of the few true global stars who did not feature at the World Cup, should be fresher than most as the European campaign begins. Even so, PSG’s overall performances have carried the feel of a hangover.

Slovan Bratislava, giants in Slovakia, return to the big stage under Yaya Toure. They are domestic champions, but their recent league form has dipped. Their squad is a patchwork of profiles: a back line that will be severely tested, and veteran forwards Andraz Sporar and Tigran Barseghyan leading the line.

PSG can call on internationals like Willian Pacho across the pitch. Bratislava simply do not have that level of depth. In Paris, with PSG expected to dictate from the first whistle, the Slovak champions are likely to spend long spells chasing shadows.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid: Anfield under new orders

Liverpool step into a new Champions League cycle under new leadership. Andoni Iraola takes charge of his first European night at Anfield, and he does so against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid – a club that thrives on ruining evenings exactly like this.

Liverpool’s Premier League start has been mixed: two draws, then a win over Ipswich. The window is shut, Alvarez is registered, but his relationship with Simeone is strained and his status as automatic starter has evaporated.

Anfield will push Liverpool forward, but their form is patchy. Atletico, with Simeone on the touchline, know how to dig in, absorb pressure and walk away with something. This feels set up for a tight, tactical contest rather than a shootout.

Sporting CP vs Galatasaray: Youth against experience

In Lisbon, two of Europe’s biggest names outside the top five leagues collide as Sporting CP host Galatasaray.

Sporting have flown out of the blocks in Liga Portugal, starting 4-1-0. Colombian international Luis Suarez and teenager Flavio Goncalves have stood out in a side built on energy and development. The average age of their starting XI is just 24.8, and that youth fuels an aggressive, front-foot style.

Galatasaray bring the opposite profile. Their squad, with an average age of 29.3, is one of the most experienced in the competition. They’ve opened their domestic campaign 3-1-0 and looked strong, but they arrive in Europe without Victor Osimhen, sidelined through injury. That’s a major blow. Osimhen already has six goals this season; removing that focal point shifts the creative and scoring burden heavily onto Brazilian attacking midfielder Gabriel Sara.

Napoli vs Arsenal: Contenders on the road

Arsenal return to the Champions League carrying the weight of expectation. After losing the final to PSG last season, they are being tipped by ESPN and other analysts as genuine favourites to go one better this time.

The early evidence backs that up. They brushed aside Man City in the Community Shield, then opened the Premier League with three straight wins, including impressive victories over Aston Villa and Chelsea. The machine looks well tuned.

They travel to Naples without key defenders William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, but the midfield has been reinforced. Bruno Guimaraes is available, whether from the start or off the bench, and Christos Tzolis, signed from Brugge, has already stepped into a starting role on the wing.

Napoli, by contrast, are wobbling. Consecutive defeats in Serie A to Como and Inter Milan – two of last season’s strongest Italian sides – have dented confidence. They do at least have home advantage here, but they still enter as underdogs.

Kevin De Bruyne, now 35, is likely to begin on the bench as Napoli manage his minutes, while Scott McTominay remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from heart surgery. That removes both experience and physicality from the core of their side.

Arsenal have momentum, depth and a clear identity. Napoli are searching for theirs. On this evidence, it would be a surprise if the English club didn’t impose themselves and extend their winning run.
