Transfer Market Update: Key Moves and Developments
The transfer market rarely sleeps. On this evidence, it’s barely even blinking.
From Tyneside to Turin, from Leverkusen to London, Europe’s summer window is crackling with movement, stand-offs and a few looming explosions.
Newcastle: New boss incoming, big calls looming
Newcastle’s rebuild is starting at the very top. The club have reached a full agreement to appoint Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach, with compensation of around £8m heading to Al Ahli. The 38-year-old German is expected to link up with the squad at their La Manga training camp on Saturday, stepping into the role Eddie Howe vacates ahead of the new Premier League season.
Behind that headline, the squad itself is shifting.
Joelinton, according to reports, told Newcastle shortly after last season that he wanted to move to Saudi Arabia. No formal bid has landed, so the Brazilian remains at St James’ Park for now, but the intention has been made clear.
Newcastle are also closing in on a new goalkeeper. Talks with Braga for Lukas Hornicek are at an advanced stage, with negotiations now centred on the payment structure. The Czech international has a £25.65m release clause and, after missing out on James Trafford, Newcastle have made finding a long-term successor to Nick Pope a priority. Hornicek, 24, already has 88 senior appearances for Braga and was part of the Czech Republic squad at this summer’s World Cup.
Out wide, the club’s pursuit of Abde Ezzalzouli has hit a snag. Newcastle have tracked the Real Betis winger for weeks and are believed to be ready to meet his £51.3m release clause. Betis president Angel Haro has already admitted Abde is “not untouchable”, and Roma have also been linked, while Aston Villa cooled their interest after taking Alejandro Garnacho on loan. The problem? The Morocco international only wants a move to a club in the Champions League. Newcastle may lead the race financially, but they still have persuading to do.
Bayer Leverkusen move for Gutierrez
Bayer Leverkusen, fresh from a title-winning season and determined not to stand still, are closing in on Miguel Gutierrez.
Italian reports say a deal with Napoli is in its final stages, with a fee between £22m and £26m close to being agreed. Leverkusen have improved their initial offer, while Napoli are ready to cash in on the Spanish left-back after just one season to fund further business this summer.
Bournemouth land Antonio Silva in cut-price coup
On the South Coast, Bournemouth are about to pull off one of the window’s more eye-catching deals.
Antonio Silva has agreed a cut-price £25.7m move just hours after captaining boyhood club Benfica in a Europa League qualifier. The 22-year-old Portugal international is travelling for a medical this weekend, leaving behind the club that developed him for a Premier League project that clearly convinced him.
For Bournemouth, it is a statement: a young, international centre-back, signed from one of Europe’s great talent factories, at a fee that looks modest in today’s market.
Chelsea: punished, but still spending — and still joking
Chelsea’s past has finally caught up with them.
The club have been hit with a £10m fine and handed a suspended two-window transfer ban after admitting breaches of FA rules over payments to agents and third parties between 2009 and 2022. A previously suspended six-point deduction was overturned on appeal, sparing them an immediate sporting penalty.
The breaches were self-reported by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital after their 2022 takeover, and the £10m will be invested into grassroots football. The message is clear: the old regime’s practices have a cost, but the new ownership has helped shape the punishment.
On the pitch, the money continues to flow. Morgan Rogers has arrived in a £117m move, and Cole Palmer has already set the tone in typically icy fashion. The pair, close friends from their Manchester City days, both use the same “shivering” celebration. Palmer, who trademarked it last year, joked that he would send “the bailiffs” round if Rogers tried to cash in on his signature move, before softening the line: they’ll just do it together.
Amid fines, bans and spending, Chelsea still find room for a bit of swagger.
Inter’s double English swoop: Stones in, Jones targeted
Inter Milan have already landed one Premier League name and are pushing hard for another.
John Stones has joined the Italian champions on a free transfer after his Manchester City contract expired at the end of June. The England defender signs a two-year deal, ending a decade at the Etihad that brought a stack of trophies and serious pedigree. Chelsea and Juventus had shown interest, but Inter won the race.
They now want Curtis Jones to follow. The Athletic reports that Inter are prepared to pay up to £30m for the Liverpool midfielder after two previous approaches were rejected. Liverpool, though, value him closer to £43m. The gap is significant, and the negotiation could drag, but Inter have made their intentions plain.
Spurs and De Zerbi line up a “bomba”
Tottenham’s summer has already been lavish. Roberto De Zerbi insists they are only getting started.
Spurs have spent more than £230m on new faces, yet the head coach has promised another transfer “bomba” to add to the spree. He wants a fierce new forward line, with talks ongoing over Manchester City’s £60m-rated Savinho. The Brazilian winger may not even be the teased “bomba” as De Zerbi also wants a striker and potentially another wide player.
Having steered Spurs away from relegation and into a position to spend big, De Zerbi is clearly intent on reshaping the attack in his own image.
Coventry break the bank for Rushworth
Coventry City are stepping into the Premier League with intent and a record transfer.
The Sky Blues have agreed an initial £22.5m deal with Brighton for goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. The fee could rise with add-ons, while Brighton have secured both a sell-on clause and a buy-back option.
Rushworth was one of the Championship’s outstanding performers last season, playing every league game under Frank Lampard as the club won promotion and keeping 17 clean sheets. Coventry are betting heavily that his form will translate to the top flight.
Brentford, Hull and West Ham move to strengthen
Brentford are closing in on Mamadou Sangare. Lens midfielder has already left the French club’s pre-season tour in Italy to complete a move, according to reports in France. The Bees want more energy and depth in midfield and have moved quickly to secure the 24-year-old.
Hull City, newly promoted, are also pushing hard. They have held positive talks over Augsburg midfielder Mert Komur, with the 21-year-old Germany Under-21 international attracting interest from several clubs. There is no agreement yet and no club-to-club negotiations in place, but Augsburg have been informed of Hull’s interest.
West Ham, preparing for life in the Championship after relegation, are trying to reload smartly. They retain a long-standing interest in Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson as they search for a left-sided attacker with Premier League experience. The Hammers are also in talks with Celtic over midfielder Arne Engels, the 22-year-old Belgium international who drew multiple rejected bids from Nottingham Forest in January. West Ham now lead that race.
Man City eye Bouaddi, London clubs circle Delap
Manchester City are planning for the future while the present still looks dominant.
They have reached an agreement with Ayyoub Bouaddi and are in advanced talks with Lille over a deal for the Morocco wonderkid. Lille want around £86m, although that price could drop if City agree to loan the 18-year-old back for the season. Bouaddi was one of the breakout stars of the World Cup and has drawn attention from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich. City are trying to get in first and stay there.
Across the capital, several clubs are watching another City-owned talent. Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Everton are all interested in Chelsea striker Liam Delap, with Chelsea open to a sale. The England Under-21 forward is valued at between £35m and £40m as clubs consider a late-window move.
Arsenal, Spurs and Barcelona scout Camberos
The hunt for the next big thing in wide areas has taken scouts to Mexico.
Arsenal and Spurs have both sent representatives to watch Guadalajara winger Hugo Camberos. The 19-year-old’s father has spoken openly about his son’s dream of playing in Europe, calling a move abroad his long-standing ambition. Barcelona are also monitoring the Mexico youth international as interest builds.
The window still has time to run, money still to be spent, and egos still to be soothed.
With managers arriving, records falling and future stars being chased across continents, the only certainty is that the next “bomba” is already being lined up.
