Sunderland Nears £30m Malick Fofana Signing for Europa League Push

Sunderland are on the verge of one of the boldest signings in their modern history, having agreed a deal worth just under £30m for Lyon winger Malick Fofana.

The 21-year-old Belgium forward is travelling to England for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract, a statement of intent from a club preparing for its first European campaign in 51 years.

Big fee, bigger statement

The agreement with Lyon will cost Sunderland an initial £25.6m, with a further £4.3m potentially due in add-ons. For a player who only joined the Ligue 1 side in 2024 after emerging at KAA Gent, it is a rapid rise and a sizeable investment.

Fofana is understood to be enthused by the move, attracted by the chance to spearhead Sunderland’s return to Europe in the Europa League and to grow with a young, ambitious squad rather than fight for minutes in a more crowded dressing room.

That choice matters, because he had other options. Arsenal made attempts to sign him, but the Premier League champions failed to reach an agreement on a fee with Lyon. Sunderland did not hesitate when the door opened.

Building a European squad

Fofana is set to join a growing continental core on Wearside. Kevin Danso is due to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan with an option to buy, adding an Austria international to the spine of the side.

The club have already moved aggressively in the market. Defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie have come in, along with midfielder Jules Ahoka, as Sunderland build on last season’s seventh-place finish in their first year back in the top flight.

The plan is clear: this is not a club content just to make up the numbers in Europe. With Fofana about to walk through the door and more experience added behind him, Sunderland are spending like a team intent on staying at this level – and testing how far they can push it.
