Towson Tigers Claim 3-1 Victory Against Bucknell
TOWSON, Md. – Towson needed a spark. It found three of them before halftime.
The Tigers struck early and often in a commanding first-half display, then held off a late push from Bucknell to claim a 3-1 non-league win on Sunday at Tiger Field.
Towson (2-2-2) grabbed control just over 14 minutes in. Meron Koro reacted quickest after a Sarah McFarland save spilled into the box, pouncing on the rebound and rolling her finish into an empty net. She nearly doubled the lead moments later, flashing another effort just wide as Bucknell’s back line scrambled.
The warning signs went unheeded, and Towson punished them from dead balls.
Off the bench, substitute forward Jayla Caldwell changed the tone of the match with two goals in a five-minute burst. Both came from corners, both from Bucknell’s failure to clear its lines.
Her first was textbook: a clean, driven header that left McFarland with no chance. The second was more opportunistic. A Bucknell clearance dropped at Caldwell’s feet on the edge of the area, and she calmly lofted a shot over the retreating keeper and into the far side netting. From 1-0 to 3-0 in a flash, Towson had full command by the break.
Bucknell did carve out one clear look in the opening half. In the 20th minute, Gaby Parker sliced between two defenders and broke into the box, only to see Towson goalkeeper Keagan Williams stand tall, close down the angle, and smother the shot. It would prove a crucial stop in preserving the Tigers’ cushion.
Second Half
The game changed after halftime. Bucknell came out sharper, more aggressive, and began to tilt the field. They outshot Towson 10-9 in the second half, pressing higher and finally finding a breakthrough from a set piece in the 58th minute.
The move started with a quality delivery from Clare Nemsick. Her service picked out Louisa Thomsen, who rose well and steered a header off the inside of the left post and just over the line. Thomsen had her first goal of the season; Nemsick collected her second assist. At 3-1, the Bison had life.
Bucknell kept pushing. Bella Connell drove into the right side of the box on a strong run, only to run out of room as Towson’s defense closed ranks. Shots came more frequently, but not the second goal they needed to truly unsettle the Tigers.
Towson still carried the heavier attacking load across the 90 minutes, finishing with a 21-16 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. Williams anchored the Tigers with five saves, including that big first-half denial on Parker.
Bucknell split the goalkeeping duties. McFarland made four saves in the first half under heavy pressure, while Reese Dolan came on after the break and turned away two shots in 45 shutout minutes as the visitors steadied themselves.
For Bucknell, now 3-5 after a fourth straight defeat, the challenge is clear. The Bison close out non-conference play with a trip to Villanova on Thursday at 4 p.m., then step into Patriot League action at home against Lehigh on Sept. 19. The question is whether this improved second-half performance at Towson becomes a turning point, or just another missed chance to change their season’s direction.
