Tottenham's Aggressive Pursuit of Sandro Tonali: De Zerbi's Vision
Tottenham Hotspur are moving aggressively to prise Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, with Roberto De Zerbi driving a deal that would send a jolt through the Premier League transfer market.
The Italian midfielder, according to multiple leading reporters, is ready to join Spurs and play under his compatriot, even without the lure of European football.
De Zerbi’s statement signing
Fabrizio Romano revealed late on Monday that Tottenham have launched a full-scale move for Tonali, with De Zerbi personally championing the transfer. This is not a scouting-department whim. It is the head coach’s hand-picked centrepiece.
Romano described Spurs as “very strong, very concrete, very determined” in their pursuit and underlined the key detail: Tonali himself is open to the move. The 24-year-old is “ready to join Spurs, even without European football, even after a terrible season for Tottenham Hotspur,” drawn by the project and the chance to work with De Zerbi.
That is the crux. A club that stumbled last season is now trying to sell a vision, not a league position. And Tonali, by all accounts, is listening.
Romano added that the possibility of Tonali at Tottenham is “really serious, really concrete,” though everything now hinges on club-to-club negotiations. Early indications are that a package in the region of €100 million – around £85 million – may be required to get close.
Tottenham, though, are not dipping a toe in. They are going all in.
Spurs surge ahead of Arsenal and City
Arsenal and Manchester City have both been in contact over Tonali for weeks, testing the waters for a player of rare technical quality and tactical versatility. But the landscape has shifted.
Romano and The Athletic’s David Ornstein both report that Spurs have accelerated past their rivals. Ornstein says Tottenham have held “positive talks” with Tonali’s camp, with ENIC backing De Zerbi’s push for a genuine statement signing.
The message from inside the club is clear: this is De Zerbi’s man, and ownership is prepared to support him.
The Athletic notes that while Arsenal and City remain interested, “Spurs are most advanced over a proposed deal.” Tottenham want Tonali not just as another midfielder, but as a symbol – proof that under De Zerbi, they intend to compete for elite talent rather than settle for the margins.
Newcastle dig in – but Tonali wants out
If Tottenham are serious, Newcastle are equally serious about making them pay.
TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reports that Newcastle will not make it easy for Spurs. Sources say the Magpies will only consider selling Tonali if an offer comes in above £100 million, a figure that reflects both his quality and their lack of desperation to sell.
Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson called Tonali “a superstar player” on talkSPORT back in February 2026, and the club have consistently treated him as such.
Behind the scenes, though, there is tension. Tonali’s camp has informed Newcastle that he wants to leave, with his preferred option a return to Italy. AC Milan, his former club, are among those keen to bring him back, and other Serie A sides have also monitored the situation.
Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs notes that Tonali would be willing to move to Serie A, but the total cost of any deal – transfer fee, wages, and associated add-ons – makes a move to Italy extremely difficult. Italian clubs simply do not have the financial firepower that a Premier League bidder like Spurs can deploy.
Spurs circle as Newcastle brace for bids
Jacobs reported on X that Spurs have already opened talks with Tonali, confirming Romano’s earlier line. Again, De Zerbi is at the heart of it, with the move “driven by Roberto De Zerbi and backed by the ownership.” Tottenham are “hoping to make a statement signing,” with “significant funds to be made available to strengthen in midfield and attack.”
So far, there has been no formal bid to Newcastle, but #NUFC are braced for offers. Arsenal and Manchester City have also made enquiries this year, yet the strongest momentum now lies in north London, on the white side.
Newcastle’s negotiating position has been reinforced by the £70 million sale of Anthony Gordon, easing any immediate pressure to cash in on Tonali. They can afford to be stubborn, and they know it. At the same time, the club is fully aware that the midfielder is exploring options and that a decisive offer could force a serious internal conversation.
A crossroads for all three clubs
This is more than a simple transfer chase. For Tottenham, landing Tonali at a nine-figure price would mark a dramatic shift in how they operate, a public declaration that De Zerbi’s tenure will be backed at the very top end of the market.
For Newcastle, it is a test of resolve and strategy. Do they hold firm on a player they rate as a cornerstone, or take a huge fee and reshape the squad again?
For Tonali, it is a career-defining choice: return to the familiarity of Serie A if a route opens up, or commit to De Zerbi’s vision and become the heartbeat of a new Tottenham midfield.
The offers are coming. The courtship is clear. Now the question is simple: who blinks first?
