Tariq Lamptey Joins QPR for Fresh Start
Tariq Lamptey’s career needed a fresh start. Queens Park Rangers have just handed him one.
The Championship club have signed the right-back on a free transfer after his departure from Fiorentina, betting that a fit and firing Lamptey can rediscover the explosive form that once lit up the Premier League.
From Chelsea prospect to QPR rebuild
Now 25, Lamptey’s journey has already taken in some of English football’s biggest stages. He came through the academy at Chelsea and made his Premier League debut in a high‑pressure fixture against Arsenal, a cameo that hinted at a fearless, attacking full-back with the engine to live in the opposition half.
He left west London for regular football at Brighton, where he became a crowd favourite. Over more than 120 appearances for the Seagulls, Lamptey’s pace and direct running turned him into one of the division’s most watchable full-backs, a modern wing-back tailor-made for high-tempo, front-foot football.
That momentum stalled in Italy. Lamptey moved to Fiorentina in September 2025, but a serious knee injury cut his Serie A adventure almost as soon as it began. He managed only two appearances before the season became a long, lonely battle for fitness.
Now, he insists that battle is close to being won.
“My recovery (from injury) has gone well and I'm not too far away now. I'm looking forward to joining with the boys,” he told the club’s website. “Throughout my football journey I've always been resilient.”
A calculated gamble with upside
For QPR, this is precisely the kind of profile that can change a season: high ceiling, point to prove, no transfer fee.
The club have not disclosed the length or terms of Lamptey’s contract, but the intent is clear. They are backing his resilience as much as his reputation. If his knee holds and his sharpness returns, they have secured a player with top-flight experience, international pedigree and the ability to transform their right flank.
Chief executive Christian Nourry underlined the scale of the coup.
“We've had good conversations about what he wants to achieve and how he feels that this is the right environment for him to flourish in,” Nourry said. “His decision to join QPR over a myriad of other EFL Championship clubs and clubs abroad is a further signal of the growing potential of this football club.”
That last line matters. Lamptey did not lack options. Choosing QPR, and the Championship grind over a move abroad, suggests he sees something building in west London – and believes he can be central to it.
World Cup experience in a rebuilding squad
Lamptey’s arrival also brings international experience to a squad looking to climb the table. Having represented England at under-21 level, he switched allegiance to Ghana and featured at the 2022 World Cup. He now has 11 senior caps for the Black Stars, a reminder that, when fit, he operates at a level above most second-tier full-backs.
For a club trying to re-establish itself as a serious force, that kind of pedigree matters in the dressing room as much as on the pitch. Younger players will see a teammate who has faced elite wingers on the biggest stage. Coaches gain a versatile, attack-minded defender who knows what it takes to survive in the Premier League and perform on the international scene.
The risk is obvious: a serious knee injury always leaves questions. The reward, if he answers them, could reshape QPR’s right side for the season.
Eyes on Portsmouth
There is no gentle bedding-in period for QPR. The new Championship campaign opens with a trip to Portsmouth on Saturday, 15 August (15:00 BST), a fixture that will test both their resolve and their ambition.
Lamptey says he is “not too far away” from full fitness. Whether he starts, features from the bench, or simply watches from the stands, his presence already changes the mood around the club.
QPR have taken a swing on talent, resilience and upside. If Tariq Lamptey’s body matches his belief, this could be the signing that turns a long season into something far more interesting.
