St Nicks Secure Victory Against Kilmacabea in Premier JFC

St Nicks stared at a do-or-die evening in Macroom and refused to blink.
Needing a win to stay alive in the McCarthy Insurance Group Cork Premier JFC, the city club dug deep, found goals at the right moments and then showed nerve down the stretch to edge out Kilmacabea and punch their ticket to the knockout stages.
Kilmacabea arrived with the luxury of knowing a draw would do. They played like it early on, composed and sharp. Eamon Shanahan and Ian Jennings set the tone, clipping over scores as the West Cork men settled quicker, moving 0-5 to 0-2 ahead after 15 minutes.
St Nicks looked in trouble. Then Robert Downey changed everything.
A rock at the back for the Cork hurlers, Downey strode forward on 18 minutes and unleashed a thunderous finish to the net, a rocket that dragged Nicks right back into it and lit up the contest. The goal jolted the city side to life.
The momentum swung. St Nicks grew in confidence, pushed higher, hit harder. On 27 minutes, they struck again. Conor McCarthy finished clinically from close range, their second green flag giving them a precious cushion in a game where every score carried qualification weight.
Kilmacabea refused to fold. Jennings produced a fine individual goal before the break, slicing through and finishing with authority to haul his side level. Half-time: St Nicks 2-3 Kilmacabea 1-6. Nothing between them. Everything on the line.
Second Half
The second half turned into a score-for-score duel.
Shanahan became Kilmacabea’s go-to man, repeatedly steadying them with points, his frees and play from open positions keeping the West Cork side in the hunt. St Nicks answered through the accuracy of J O’Sullivan and the industry of McCarthy, keeping the board moving and the tension high.
By the midway point of the half, it was exactly as the evening deserved: deadlocked at 2-6 to 1-9. One mistake or one moment of brilliance felt decisive.
St Nicks found the moment.
O’Sullivan, increasingly influential, struck a lovely two-pointer to edge them back in front, a crucial score that finally gave Nicks a sliver of daylight. The city side sensed their chance. O’Sullivan tagged on another point, and when Dave Dunlea fisted over soon after, the gap stretched to four. St Nicks, from chasing the group, were suddenly in control of it.
Kilmacabea were not finished. They turned to former Cork footballer Damien Gore off the bench in the closing stages, a clear signal they were going all in. Shanahan, still carrying the fight, landed yet another score to set up a frantic finale.
But St Nicks held their ground. They managed the final minutes, shut down space, and refused to yield the goal Kilmacabea desperately needed. When the whistle went, the city men had their reward: a 2-10 to 1-10 victory and a place in the quarter-finals.
Next up is Kinsale. The examination only gets tougher, but St Nicks will head into it knowing they’ve already come through one high-pressure test with their season on the line.
