Bruno Guimaraes Set for Premier League Start as Arsenal Faces Sunderland
Mikel Arteta looks ready to take the handbrake off on Bruno Guimaraes.
The £75million summer signing is in line for his first Premier League start when Arsenal travel to Sunderland on Saturday night, with the Brazilian finally over the minor injury niggles that have slowed his introduction.
He stepped off the bench in midweek against Napoli and looked sharp. Now the plan is bigger: a start alongside Declan Rice in the heart of midfield, a partnership designed to tighten Arsenal’s grip on games and add a harder edge in what could quickly become a hostile atmosphere at the Stadium of Light.
Hostile is guaranteed. Guimaraes’ Newcastle past ensures he will be targeted from the first whistle. Arteta will not care. This is a selection about control, not sentiment.
Arteta ready to refresh his XI
The 1-0 win in Naples came at a cost in energy, if not in bodies, and Arteta is expected to rotate.
Christos Tzolis and Kai Havertz are both pushing to come back into the starting XI after limited minutes in Europe, offering fresh legs and a different attacking profile behind the striker. At left-back, Riccardo Calafiori is tipped to reclaim his spot from Piero Hincapie, restoring a more natural balance on that flank.
The spine, though, is where the intrigue lies. Rice plus Guimaraes gives Arsenal a double pivot that can both build and destroy, freeing Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard to stay higher and probe Sunderland’s back line.
If Guimaraes delivers, this is the night he stops being the expensive new toy on the bench and starts becoming part of Arsenal’s core.
Defensive fitness calls for Arteta
At the back, Arteta still has decisions to make.
Ben White is available despite coming off late against Napoli, easing fears of another defensive headache. Jurrien Timber is edging closer after his long lay-off and is pushing for a place in the squad, having trained with the group for several days.
“Let’s see, we have another training session [on Friday],” Arteta said. “He’s been doing really well, he’s been training with us now for a few days and he looks in good shape.”
Cristhian Mosquera is also nearing a return, though he appears the less likely of the two to feature at Sunderland.
“He’s been doing really well,” Arteta said of Mosquera. “Let’s see if he can get this game or the next one. It will be around that time, I think.”
One situation is clear. William Saliba will not be involved. The French defender remains out for an extended spell after aggravating a back problem on international duty earlier in the summer. Surgery was avoided, which matters for the long term, but Arsenal must still cope without one of the pillars of their back line.
