St Johnstone Signs Joel Cotterill from Swansea City
St Johnstone have moved to bolster their midfield with the signing of Joel Cotterill from Swansea City for an undisclosed fee.
The 21-year-old has agreed a three-year contract in Perth, tying him to the club until the summer of 2027, as he looks to turn a string of loan spells into a permanent breakthrough.
From Swansea prospect to Premiership return
Cotterill is a product of Swansea’s academy, making his senior debut for the Welsh club in 2022 before being sent out to gain experience in the English lower leagues with Stockport County, Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers.
His first real taste of Scottish top-flight football came last season. Sent north on loan to Dundee for the second half of the campaign, he made 11 Premiership appearances and scored once, showing enough promise to convince another club in the division to bring him back.
That spell has clearly whetted his appetite.
“I had a call with the gaffer on Monday and he told me everything about the club,” Cotterill told St Johnstone’s media team. “I watched the game against Dundee on Wednesday night – and I saw how the team wants to play.”
A midfielder who wants the ball
Cotterill’s footballing education at Swansea has shaped his identity on the pitch.
“Growing up at Swansea, it was always a team with the ball,” he said. “I feel my biggest strength is being in possession and making things happen. I also like to drive forward and like to think I can be powerful with the ball.”
St Johnstone, who have been looking to add more composure and creativity in the middle of the park, will expect exactly that: a midfielder comfortable dictating play, but willing to carry the ball and break lines when the game opens up.
Ready for the grind of the Premiership
The young Welshman has already learned that Scottish football does not wait for anyone.
“I’ve had different challenges out on loan,” he reflected. “I think I’ve adapted previously and I’ve already got a taste for playing in the Scottish Premiership.
“It can be demanding and the games come thick and fast, but I’ll make sure I’m ready for it and up for the challenge.”
Now, with a permanent home and a clear pathway in front of him, Cotterill’s next challenge is simple: turn potential into presence and make himself impossible to leave out of the St Johnstone team sheet.
