The Slovenian Football Federation (NZS) confirmed on Monday that the 46-year-old has ended his professional career, drawing a line under one of the most distinguished refereeing journeys of the modern era.

“One week after the World Cup final in the USA, Slavko Vincic has officially brought his historic refereeing career at the top of this sport to an end,” the NZS announced on its website, marking the moment with the kind of formal tribute usually reserved for elite players and coaches.

By taking charge of the World Cup final, the federation of the small Adriatic nation said, Vincic “consolidated his status as one of the best referees in history.” It was the ultimate assignment, the game every referee dreams of and only a handful ever reach.

The accolades did not stop with the final whistle.

To cap his farewell season, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) named him the best referee of the World Cup, highlighting “the clear and firm disciplinary control that characterizes elite refereeing.” In an era of microscopic scrutiny and constant VAR debate, that kind of endorsement carries weight.

His performances in the tournament also earned him the prestigious “Giulio Campanati” prize in Italy, another nod from a country that treats the art of officiating with almost the same seriousness as the art of defending.
