Rory Finneran Receives First Senior Call-Up for Republic of Ireland
Rory Finneran has been handed his first senior Republic of Ireland call-up, a rapid step up for the Newcastle United teenager as Heimir Hallgrimsson reshapes his squad on the fly in Spain.
The 18-year-old has linked up with the group at their training camp in Murcia ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Grenada at the Estadio Nueva Condomina (17:00 BST), a low-key fixture that suddenly carries major personal significance for the midfielder.
Finneran only joined Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers in 2024, but his rise through the Irish youth ranks has been steady and assured. He has already featured at under-17 and under-19 level for his country; now he finds himself one good training week away from a first senior cap.
His promotion comes amid a flurry of late changes. Cardiff City defender Joel Bagan and Ipswich Town winger Kasey McAteer have both been forced out of the squad through injury, opening the door for Hallgrimsson to turn to youth.
One new face, though, has disappeared as quickly as he arrived.
Benfica attacker Jaden Umeh, who had also earned a first senior call-up, has been withdrawn by his club. Because the Grenada friendly falls outside Fifa’s official international window, Benfica are under no obligation to release the 18-year-old and have chosen to keep him for a crucial under-19 fixture.
Their under-19s face a must-win match against Famalicao on Saturday as they chase qualification for the Uefa Youth League. Umeh underlined his importance at that level by scoring twice in a 6-2 win over UD Leiria on Sunday, a performance that effectively sealed his fate for this window.
“Benfica are still fighting in their U19s to be in the Uefa Youth League,” Hallgrimsson said. “The plan was for them to have secured that by now, but unfortunately, results this weekend didn't go their way, so Jaden still has one more game to play.
“We knew beforehand that this was a possibility, even if it was unlikely.
“It is unlucky for him that the results went that way, as we were looking forward to working with him, but we understand the club's position and will have to wait for a future window to bring him into the environment.”
So Umeh waits. Finneran doesn’t.
For the Newcastle youngster, this camp in the Spanish sun is more than a stopgap solution to injuries and withdrawals. It is a chance to stake an early claim in a squad Hallgrimsson is clearly willing to refresh, even when the calendar and club commitments make everything more complicated than it looks on paper.
