Ronald Araujo was once the future of Barcelona’s defence. Now, he might be heading for the exit if he decides his future lies elsewhere.

The club, according to reports in Spain, will not push him out. But they will not hold him back either.

From defensive pillar to uncertain future

Not long ago, Araujo sat comfortably in the conversation about the best centre-backs in world football. At 27, with his blend of aggression, recovery pace and leadership, he looked like the natural heir to marshal Barça’s back line for the next decade. Manchester United were even prepared to pay big to drag him to the Premier League.

That version of Araujo has faded.

The last seasons have been bruising. Form has dipped. Fitness has betrayed him. At one point, he stepped away from Barcelona altogether to prioritise his mental health, a rare and telling decision at the elite level.

The blows kept coming. A muscular problem denied him the chance to appear for Uruguay at the 2026 World Cup. He did not play a single minute at the tournament he had targeted as a personal and national showcase.

Yet in January 2025, Barcelona still showed faith, handing him a new contract that runs until 2031. On paper, it looked like a long-term marriage. In reality, the relationship now feels fragile.

A respectful open door

AS report that Barcelona are willing to sell Araujo this summer for the right offer, but stress an important nuance: they will not force him out. The club hierarchy retain deep respect for a player who has given them 213 appearances in all competitions since arriving from Boston River in 2018.

This is not a fire sale. It is a door quietly left ajar.

If Araujo asks to leave in search of regular football, the club will not stand in his way. That’s the line from inside the Camp Nou offices.

The problem for the Uruguayan is brutally simple: he is no longer first choice.

Pau Cubarsi, the teenage prodigy, has surged past him. Eric Garcia, back in the frame, is also seen ahead. Gerard Martin is pushing. Andreas Christensen remains a trusted option. Araujo, once the rock, now looks like the fifth name on the team sheet at centre-back.

For a player of his stature, that is not a role. It is a warning.

Flick, Deco and a decisive summer

This summer will bring clarity. Araujo is expected to sit down with head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco to thrash out his future.

He is, by all accounts, willing to stay and fight. That part has never been in doubt. He wants to feel “important within the project” — not just a squad body, not just a rotation piece used to plug gaps.

The question is whether Barcelona can offer that status now that a new defensive hierarchy has formed.

At 6ft 3in, Araujo still has the physical profile and experience that top clubs crave. Manchester United and Liverpool have both been linked with him in previous windows, but there is currently no strong Premier League move on the table.

So he stands at a career crossroads: stay, accept the battle and try to reclaim his place in a changing Barça back line, or push for a move and rebuild his reputation as a guaranteed starter elsewhere.
