Roma Pursue Mason Greenwood as Marseille Talks Intensify

Roma have moved to the front of the queue for Mason Greenwood, striking an agreement on personal terms with the Marseille forward and turning a long-running pursuit into a very real possibility.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the 24-year-old has given the green light to a switch to the Stadio Olimpico. The proposed deal is built on a progressive salary structure, starting at a net €4 million plus performance-related bonuses – a contract that underlines how central Roma’s owners see him to their attacking rebuild.

The problem now is not the player. It is the price.

Marseille are understood to be holding out for around €55 million. Roma’s opening proposal sits closer to €40m, a sizeable gap that sets up a tense negotiating phase between two clubs moving from admiration to hard numbers.

Marseille’s stance is complicated by their own situation. The French club face financial concerns and reports of a possible threat to their place in next season’s Europa League, pressure that naturally sharpens the need to generate funds. In that context, Greenwood – coming off a productive spell in Ligue 1 – has become both an asset on the pitch and a potential solution off it.

Signs are growing that the player is preparing for a new chapter. Reports in France suggest he has already handed back the keys to his house in Aix, a small but telling detail that points towards a departure from the country.

For much of the summer, the script looked very different. Fenerbahce had surged into pole position, their interest fuelled publicly by presidential candidate Hakan Safi, who tied part of his campaign to landing Greenwood and claimed to have agreed a deal running until 2030. Istanbul seemed the most likely destination.

Then the election result flipped the story. Safi lost to Aziz Yildirim, and with him went the political backing behind the proposed transfer. Without that driving force, the move to Turkey stalled and then all but disappeared from the agenda. The opening Fenerbahce created, Roma have been quick to exploit.

Now the Italian club are regarded as the leading contenders for Greenwood’s signature, with the player’s reported preference aligning neatly with Roma’s need to sharpen their attacking edge under ambitious ownership.

The next phase is clear: Roma and Marseille must find a number they can both live with. Roma are expected to keep chipping away at the French club’s valuation in the coming weeks, keen to close a deal before pre-season gets fully underway and squad plans harden.

One other club will be watching every development. Manchester United, Greenwood’s former side, are reportedly in line for a percentage of any fee thanks to a sell-on clause inserted into his previous move. The higher Marseille can drive the final figure, the more Old Trafford stands to benefit.

For now, the deal sits in that familiar transfer-window limbo: personal terms agreed, player willing, clubs circling the same table, still some distance apart. Roma have made their move. The next offer may decide whether Greenwood’s future is written in Giallorosso.
