Richarlison's Vasco Return Collapses Amid Contract Dispute at Spurs
Richarlison’s route out of Tottenham has slammed shut again, this time in Brazil. A proposed move to Vasco da Gama has collapsed, leaving the forward’s future as murky as ever and the clock in his homeland ticking loudly in the background.
Spurs were understood to have agreed a fee with Vasco for the 29-year-old, a deal that would have taken him back to Brazil and out of a messy stand-off in north London. The framework was there. The escape hatch looked open.
Then the same problem reappeared. Personal terms.
Those negotiations, once more, proved the stumbling block and talks broke down, ending Vasco’s push just hours before the Brazilian transfer window shuts on Friday night. With no agreement in place, there is now a growing expectation that Richarlison will stay at Tottenham, at least for the time being.
His situation at the club is already fraught. The Brazilian has been left out of Spurs’ Premier League squad after a £35m deadline-day move to Everton fell apart, again over a disagreement on personal terms. Two exits, two failures, the same sticking point.
Tension between player and club has been simmering. On Thursday, it emerged that Richarlison and Tottenham are in dispute over the remaining nine months of his contract. The deal runs until next summer, but Spurs hold an option to extend it by a further 12 months, strengthening the club’s hand and complicating any clean break.
Richarlison is understood to be exploring every possible route out. Sources indicate he is keen to be released from the rest of his contract, a move that would allow him to restart his career elsewhere without a transfer fee attached. Tottenham, armed with that extension clause, are under no obligation to grant it.
Into this storm stepped Roberto de Zerbi, but the head coach made it clear he wants no part in the wrangle. Asked about Richarlison’s future at his news conference on Friday, he cut the subject dead.
“I don't know,” he said. “It's not my job.”
De Zerbi did, though, choose his words carefully when pressed on the wider picture between player and club.
“What I can say is I know very well what the club has done for Richarlison and I know very well what Richarlison has done for the club in the last month, two months,” he said.
“I know, the club knows, he knows, his agent knows. Everyone knows better than you [the media]. Much better.”
It was a pointed answer, hinting at private conversations and a shared understanding behind closed doors, while offering nothing that might inflame the situation further in public.
For now, Richarlison sits in limbo: out of the Premier League squad, blocked from a move to Everton, and now denied a return to Vasco. The Brazilian window shuts on Friday night. Tottenham still control the contract.
Something has to give. The question is who blinks first.
