Richarlison's Contract Dispute with Tottenham Deepens
Richarlison’s summer of uncertainty has taken another sharp turn, with Tottenham Hotspur refusing to tear up his contract as the Brazilian pushes hard for a return to Vasco da Gama.
The 29-year-old has been at the centre of a chaotic window. Spurs tried to move him on in the final days of the English summer market, attempting to use him in a swap deal for Iliman Ndiaye. That plan collapsed when Richarlison failed to agree personal terms with Everton, killing Tottenham’s hopes of landing Ndiaye, who went to Manchester City instead.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side then pivoted, bringing in Mykhaylo Mudryk from Chelsea on loan with an option to buy. Richarlison, meanwhile, was left in limbo.
A proposed switch to Trabzonspor never materialised. Now his focus is on Vasco da Gama, the club where he first made his name. Reports in Brazil on Thursday suggested he has already agreed terms with Vasco and is pushing to have his Spurs contract cancelled to smooth the move.
Time is against him. The Brazilian summer transfer window shuts on Friday night, and the clock is ticking loudly.
By Thursday evening, BBC Sport reported that the situation had hardened. Richarlison and Tottenham are “in dispute over the remaining nine months of his contract”, with the forward “exploring his options” and “keen to be released from his deal”.
Spurs’ stance? Firm.
The club have ruled out simply releasing him as a free agent. Talks with his representatives are ongoing, but the mood has shifted, with the matter said to have “escalated in recent days”. Richarlison wants an agreement that lets him walk away for nothing. Tottenham do not see that as remotely realistic.
There is another layer. Spurs hold a 12‑month option to extend his contract through to the end of next season, strengthening their hand. The club are described as unwilling to negotiate any settlement over the rest of his deal, leaving Richarlison boxed in as the Vasco deadline looms.
Amid the off-field wrangle, De Zerbi has already mentally moved on. The head coach revealed a telling pre-season conversation that framed the current standoff.
“At the beginning of pre-season I spoke to Richarlison and asked him if he wanted to extend his contract because I was happy to keep him with us,” De Zerbi said.
“He didn’t want to. So, Richarlison is a good player, yes. He was important last season, yes, very important. He’s a good guy, yes. But in the end, I had to stop myself putting pressure on the players if the players show me they want to leave.
“I’m sorry for him, but we have to go to another page and work with Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush.”
The message is clear: the dressing room is moving forward without him, even if the contract will not. With Brazil’s window about to slam shut and Tottenham refusing to blink, Richarlison’s next move may define not only his season, but the next phase of his career.
