Red Bull Appoints Roger Schmidt as Global Head of Soccer
Red Bull have gone back to a trusted old hand to steer their sprawling football project, naming former RB Salzburg and Bayer Leverkusen boss Roger Schmidt as their new Global Head of Soccer.
The 59-year-old German has signed a long-term deal and will formally step into the role on October 1, just days after the position opened up.
From Klopp’s Exit to Schmidt’s Return
The vacancy arose only a week ago, when Jürgen Klopp left his Red Bull post to take over as Germany’s national team head coach, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann after the World Cup. Red Bull have wasted no time, moving decisively to restore a clear figurehead at the top of their multi-club structure.
Schmidt will work side by side with Florian Scholz, Head of Global Soccer Commercial, forming a two-pronged leadership designed to fuse sporting ambition with commercial growth across the group’s worldwide portfolio.

A Familiar Architect for a Familiar Model
Schmidt is deeply woven into Red Bull’s football story. Between 2012 and 2014, he built his reputation at RB Salzburg, imprinting the high-intensity, vertical style that has become synonymous with the brand. His work in Austria helped shape the club’s identity and set a template that others have since followed.
From there, his career took him across three continents: Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, Beijing Guoan in the Chinese Super League, PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie, and Benfica in Portugal. Most recently, he served as Global Sports Director for Japan’s J-League, broadening his perspective on league-wide development and long-term planning.
Now he returns to the organisation where his pressing, front-foot football once lit the fuse.
Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff made no secret of his satisfaction at bringing Schmidt back into the fold, hailing his “many years of experience,” “outstanding football expertise,” and his alignment with Red Bull’s philosophy. Mintzlaff also underlined a trait that matters more than ever in a multi-club era: Schmidt’s track record in identifying and nurturing young talent, then pushing them to the very top.

Schmidt will oversee and align football operations and talent pathways across Red Bull’s network, which stretches from RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg in Europe to New York Red Bulls in MLS and beyond.
