Real Madrid's Pursuit of Rodri Hits Major Roadblock
Real Madrid’s ambitious move for Rodri has hit a wall. And not a small one.
According to Fichajes, talks over personal terms have collapsed, freezing what had been one of the defining transfer stories of the summer. The 30-year-old midfielder, fresh from being named player of the tournament at the World Cup, had been open to a return to Spain. Madrid activated the operation on the back of that stellar campaign, sensing a rare chance to prise one of Manchester City’s pillars out of the Etihad.
The numbers, though, told a different story.
Contract stand-off derails momentum
Rodri’s camp went into negotiations with a clear idea: a four-year contract, a long-term commitment that would mark the end of his cycle in England and the start of a new chapter in La Liga. Madrid’s first proposal fell well short of those expectations, both in length and financial terms.
The response from the player’s side was blunt. Talks became tense in recent hours, and the midfielder has been left unimpressed by the salary package on the table. What began as a high-profile courtship has turned into an impasse, with negotiations now effectively frozen.
Time is not on Madrid’s side. The transfer window closes at the end of August, and each day without progress pushes this saga closer to collapse.
Gap in valuations adds another layer
The problems do not stop at personal terms. The two clubs are also some distance apart on the fee.
City value Rodri between €65 million and €75 million. Madrid, working within their own financial framework, had hoped to land him for closer to €60 million. It is not an enormous gulf in modern market terms, but when added to the wage dispute, it becomes a serious obstacle.
For Real Madrid, the immediate challenge is no longer just City’s stance. It is convincing Rodri himself to come back to the negotiating table after relations have cooled. Without that, any improved bid to the Premier League champions becomes almost irrelevant.
Mourinho’s key request on hold
This is not just any target for Madrid. New head coach Jose Mourinho specifically identified a central midfielder capable of dictating the build-up and setting the tempo from deep. In his plans, Rodri would be the metronome — comfortable as a lone pivot in a 4-3-3 or as part of a double pivot in a more conservative shape.
From a tactical standpoint, the fit is obvious. From a contractual standpoint, it is anything but.
Rodri remains tied to City until 30 June 2027. That long deal gives the English club firm control over his future. This summer does represent one of the last windows in which City can command a major fee before he enters the final year of his contract, but they are under no financial pressure to cash in.
Quite the opposite. City are content to keep him unless two conditions are met: a formal request to leave from the player, and an offer that matches their valuation.
Neither has arrived.
Madrid’s decision point
Everything now swings on Madrid’s appetite to push this over the line.
To revive the deal, they will need to come back with a significantly improved wage package that satisfies a World Cup star in his prime. They will also have to edge their transfer offer closer to City’s asking price, accepting that elite midfielders with long contracts do not come cheap.
If they hesitate, the outcome looks straightforward. Rodri stays in England, continuing as the heartbeat of City’s midfield, or he waits to see whether another serious proposal emerges from La Liga.
For Madrid, a manager who built his reputation on control and structure is still waiting for his cornerstone in the middle of the pitch. The question now is simple: how badly do they want him?
