Real Betis arrive at Estadio de la Ceramica on Monday chasing a third straight win in all competitions. Villarreal, by contrast, are still waiting for their first under new head coach Inigo Perez. Two clubs, one early-season crossroads.

Now comes a defining week before the three-week international break. Betis at home, then Malaga, then Levante. Perez needs more than performances; he needs points.
History offers him a sliver of comfort. Across his five previous meetings with Betis as a manager, he has never lost (one win, four draws). It is not much, but in a run like this, any thread of positivity is worth holding.
Betis riding the wave
While Villarreal search for a spark, Betis arrive with the wind at their backs.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side have opened the 2026-27 campaign with four wins from five competitive matches. The standout result came in their last La Liga outing: a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid, a statement win that underlined their ambitions near the top of the table.
They backed that up in Europe. Back in the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2005-06, Betis went to Lille and ground out a 3-2 win in a wild, seesaw contest. Marc Bartra scored twice, dragging his side level on two separate occasions. Each time Lille thought they had control, Betis wrestled it back.
Then came Troy Parrott. The match-winner against Real Madrid stepped onto the Champions League stage and did it again, scoring on his debut in the competition to seal another comeback victory. Two huge games, two decisive goals. His confidence will be soaring.
Betis sit fifth in La Liga, only three points behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. This is not a side merely chasing European qualification; it is one eyeing the top of the table and playing like it.
Their recent record against Villarreal reinforces that belief. Betis took four points from the two league meetings last season, including a dramatic draw on their last visit to La Ceramica, when Antony struck twice to haul them back from 2-0 down. That result extended their unbeaten run in Villarreal’s backyard to four league games (two wins, two draws) since a 2-0 defeat there in October 2021.
They know this ground. They know they can get a result here.
Team news and likely lineups
Villarreal are expected to be without Carlos Romero, while Juan Foyth is unlikely to feature after missing the last two matches through injury.
Between the posts, Peter Gulacsi is set for his La Liga debut, having replaced Luiz Junior for the narrow Champions League defeat in Dortmund. With a heavy schedule, Perez is ready to rotate. Alex Freeman, Nicolas Pepe, Alberto Moleiro, Ayoze Perez and Gerard Moreno are all pushing to start on Monday.
