Raphinha Returns to Barcelona: Aiming for Peak Performance
Raphinha slipped through the doors at St George’s Park on Monday with little fuss, but his arrival may prove one of the most important moments of Barcelona’s summer.
Fresh from his break and finally over the injuries that wrecked his World Cup, the Brazilian winger has joined Hansi Flick’s squad in England as the Catalans sharpen their plans for the new season and their La Liga opener against Elche on 23 August.
This is not just another player reporting for duty. This is a reclamation project.
From World Cup frustration to fresh start
Raphinha returns carrying the weight of a bruising international summer. He began Brazil’s World Cup campaign as a starter, lining up for the first two group games and expected to be one of the side’s main attacking outlets.
Then it broke.
Just 39 minutes into Brazil’s second match, against Haiti, a thigh injury to his right leg forced him off. His tournament ended there. He never kicked another ball, and Brazil’s own campaign soon followed him out of the door with a round-of-16 defeat to Norway.
Barcelona, though, are treating that setback as a line in the sand. Internally, the expectation is clear: he is back, fully recovered, and ready to work from day one.
No rush into pre-season action
The temptation would be to throw him straight back into the spotlight. Flick and his staff are resisting that urge.
According to journalist Nil Sola, Raphinha is not expected to feature in Barça’s first two friendlies of the tour. The Blaugrana face Birmingham City on 31 July and Preston North End on 3 August, but the winger has only just linked up with the group and remains short of match rhythm.
The club see those dates as too soon, too risky. They want the old Raphinha back, not another entry on the injury list.
Flick wants his Ballon d’Or contender again
That “old Raphinha” is not a nostalgic fantasy. It is recent history.
Under Flick in the 2024-25 season, the Brazilian produced the most devastating football of his career. He became one of Europe’s most influential attackers, his form strong enough to push him into the wider conversation for the Ballon d’Or.
The numbers from that campaign still jump off the page: 34 goals and 26 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions. When he played, Barcelona looked sharper, more ruthless, more aggressive in their pressing. The attack carried a different edge with him on the pitch.
Last season told a different story. Two significant hamstring injuries shredded his momentum and limited him to 33 appearances, though he still managed 21 goals. The impact was obvious: Barça lost a key reference point in the final third, and Flick lost one of his most reliable weapons.
For the coach, restoring that version of Raphinha is not a luxury. It is a central objective for the new campaign.
A tailored plan for a decisive season
To get there, Barcelona have moved beyond generic pre-season fitness work. New head of physical preparation Benjamin Kugel has put together an individual programme built specifically around Raphinha’s needs, his injury history and the demands of Flick’s high-intensity game model.
The plan is simple in concept, demanding in execution: keep him on the pitch, week after week. Protect the hamstrings, build robustness, recover the explosiveness that once terrorised full-backs across Europe.
Both player and coach have identified this season as a personal mission. Raphinha wants to prove that his Ballon d’Or-level year was not a one-off spike but the standard. Flick wants his system’s most incisive wide outlet firing again.
Barcelona, watching from the sidelines of St George’s Park, know what is at stake. If the Brazilian’s body holds and Kugel’s programme does its job, they are not just getting a winger back.
They are getting back the player who once tilted entire games in their favour – and who may yet tilt the title race as well.
