PSG's Pursuit of Yan Diomande Faces Critical Week
Paris Saint-Germain are staring at a decisive week in their pursuit of Yan Diomande, with the deal threatening to unravel just as Liverpool sense a way back into a race they thought was lost.
What looked like a straight sprint to Paris is turning into a transfer saga with too many moving parts and one immovable object: RB Leipzig’s price.
From Liverpool’s long courtship to PSG’s promise
Liverpool have been circling Diomande for months. The 19-year-old Ivorian, electric off either flank, was identified as a marquee heir to Mohamed Salah long before the Egyptian’s departure at the end of last season. By December, Liverpool officials were in near-daily contact with the player’s camp, preparing the ground for a summer move to Anfield.
Then came the twist. Diomande made it clear that, if he left Leipzig this summer, his priority would be PSG. The message hit Liverpool hard. The two-time European champions quickly opened talks with Leipzig, and the mood in Paris was that a deal was a matter of time.
Four weeks on, there is still no agreement. The optimism has drained away, replaced by German reports warning of a potential “fiasco” for PSG.
The stand-off: one price, no compromise
At the heart of the dispute is money, and Leipzig are not blinking.
The Bundesliga club have long signalled that Diomande would only leave for a record fee. According to Bild, they have now fixed that “compromise” figure at €120m (£102.5m, $136.5m) and made it clear that this is the minimum required to sanction his sale. Their preference, even now, is to keep him for at least another year.
For PSG, that number is the problem. Luis Enrique admires Diomande and would happily add him to an attack already packed with talent, but he does not believe the teenager justifies such an outlay when he cannot guarantee him regular starts. With the club already loaded with attacking options, paying €120m for a player who might not walk straight into the XI is a step the coach is reluctant to endorse.
Enrique’s stance has filtered into the negotiations. PSG want Diomande, just not at Leipzig’s price. Leipzig, for their part, are adamant they will not drop it by “a penny”. They know the risk of keeping a player whose heart is set on leaving, but they are prepared to ride out any tension.
That deadlock is why the word “fiasco” is now being used.
Growing frustration around Diomande
While the clubs haggle, Diomande waits.
His entourage had expected a deal to be wrapped up by now. Instead, they are watching PSG stall and Leipzig dig in. Bild reports that his camp are ready to increase the pressure through Roc Nation, the powerful advisory agency working on his behalf.
The timing is awkward. After a short holiday following his World Cup exploits with Ivory Coast, Diomande is due back at Leipzig’s training complex next week. Unless there is a sudden breakthrough, he will walk back into a club that knows he wants out and a dressing room that has watched the saga play out in public.
The situation is already drawing comparisons in Germany with Xavi Simons, who pushed to leave Leipzig in 2024 only to see suitors scared off by the club’s demands. A year later, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur for a lower fee. Leipzig held their ground then. They look ready to do the same again.
Liverpool wait in the shadows
This is where Liverpool re-enter the frame.
Their initial offer for Diomande has already been rejected, but the Merseyside club have not walked away. According to reports, Liverpool would have no issue paying the £102.5m Leipzig are asking if the opportunity arose again.
Right now, that opportunity depends on PSG stepping aside. If Enrique and PSG’s hierarchy decide the fee is simply too steep, the path opens for Liverpool to try to resurrect a deal they once thought was theirs.
Arsenal and Manchester City have also been linked with an attempt to hijack the move, but Liverpool’s need is the most acute. Salah’s exit has left a void on the right of their attack and in their dressing room. Diomande has been earmarked as the kind of high-impact, long-term signing that can reshape a frontline.
For the moment, Liverpool are working on other winger options. One name heavily mentioned is PSG’s Bradley Barcola, with suggestions that the 23-year-old has ways to push for a move and force PSG’s hand if Anfield comes calling. That interest only underlines Liverpool’s determination to leave this window with a top-tier wide player.
PSG still in pole – for now
Despite the noise, sources close to the situation still insist that a move to Paris remains the likeliest outcome. Both clubs are said to be hopeful of eventually finding common ground, and Diomande himself remains intent on joining PSG.
That is the tension at the heart of this story: a player who wants Paris, a club that wants him but not at any cost, and a seller who refuses to bend.
