Plymouth Argyle Secures First Away Win in League One
Plymouth Argyle finally found their away spark in Sky Bet League One, racing to a 3-2 win at winless Doncaster in a scoreline that flattered the hosts far more than the visitors.
Tom Cleverley’s side were sharper, cleaner and far more ruthless in both boxes, and once they stepped on the accelerator, Doncaster never truly caught up.
Evans ignites Argyle
The opening exchanges were scrappy, but Plymouth gradually took control. Passes started to stick, runners began to find space, and Doncaster were pushed deeper and deeper.
The breakthrough came on 28 minutes. Oliver Irow let fly, Tommy Simkin could only parry, and Will Evans reacted quickest to turn the loose ball home. It was a poacher’s finish, but it came from Argyle’s growing authority rather than any real chaos.
Doncaster tried to respond. Alfie May, always the outlet, almost produced something spectacular with a bicycle kick that took a deflection and looped over before the interval. It was a reminder of his threat, but also of how little service he had been given.
May strikes back from the spot
The second half started with more purpose from the hosts. This time they got their reward.
On 51 minutes, Owen Bailey was bundled over in the box by Matty Sorinola and the referee pointed to the spot. May stepped up and, having been denied in open play, made no mistake from 12 yards to drag Doncaster level.
For a brief spell, the mood shifted. The home crowd stirred, tackles flew in, and Doncaster finally looked like a side intent on ending their winless start.
It didn’t last.
Pepple and Watts kill it
The equaliser jolted Plymouth rather than rattled them. They reset, kept the ball, and waited for the gaps to appear again. When they did, Argyle were ruthless.
With 16 minutes to play, Bim Pepple was slipped into space and showed real composure, steadying himself before sliding a calm finish past Simkin in the 74th minute. One chance, one clinical answer. Doncaster were behind again and this time the body language told its own story.
The pressure finally told again nine minutes later. A defensive mix-up at the back gifted substitute Caleb Watts the sort of opportunity forwards dream about. He pounced, took full advantage of the confusion and rolled his shot into an empty net on 83 minutes. Game over in everything but the mathematics.
Late twist, no late drama
Doncaster’s response was too little and far too late. They huffed and chased, but Argyle managed the game with a control that underlined the gap between the sides on the day.
Deep into stoppage time, Sean Grehan rose to meet a Bayley McCann free-kick and thumped in a powerful header. It trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the final minute of added time, but it was a consolation, not a lifeline.
Plymouth left with their first away league win of the campaign and the sense of a side beginning to travel with conviction. Doncaster, still searching for a first victory, walked off knowing that late goals mean little when the real contest has already slipped away.
