Manchester United Pursue Bayern's Versatile Defender Josip Stanisic

Last year, the co-owners had thrown their weight behind the attack. This time, the engine room. Which leaves the next obvious project: the defence. That is where the real surgery is coming.
Plenty of United’s defenders are effectively on trial. Only a couple can feel remotely safe. Versatility has become a buzzword at Old Trafford, and that is exactly why Josip Stanisic has moved firmly onto the radar.
United eye Bayern’s Mr Reliable
United are tracking the Bayern Munich defender closely. They are not alone. According to Fussballdaten, the 26-year-old Croatia international is being watched by a string of European giants: PSG, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Liverpool are all in the queue.
Stanisic is the kind of modern defender recruitment departments love to circle in red. Primarily a right-back, he can slide inside to centre-back and, thanks to being genuinely two-footed, he has also operated on the left.
Last season underlined his value. He racked up 43 appearances in all competitions. Twenty-six of those came at right-back, 15 at left-back, and two in the middle. Coaches trust him. He fills gaps. He doesn’t complain. He just plays.
For United, who crave depth at right-back and centre-back, the profile almost feels tailor-made. Experience in the Bundesliga and in European competition only strengthens the case.
The price of versatility
There is a catch. Several, in fact.
Stanisic is tied to Bayern until 2029, a long contract that puts the power squarely in the German club’s hands. They are under no pressure to sell, and they know exactly how valuable a plug-and-play defender can be over a long season.
Reports indicate Bayern will not even sit down at the table unless bids land in the region of £47 million to £56 million, or roughly €55 million to €65 million. On top of that, they are expected to push for heavy performance-related bonuses and a sell-on clause.
For a club of United’s size, the fee itself should not be an insurmountable obstacle. The bigger questions lie elsewhere. Is Stanisic prepared to walk away from the Allianz Arena, where he has become a regular presence in the squad? And will INEOS bend their emerging transfer doctrine?
The new regime has leaned hard into recruiting Premier League-proven players. Stanisic does not fit that mould. He offers Bundesliga pedigree, not English experience.
So United stand at an interesting crossroads. The defender on their list looks ideal on the pitch, but the deal around him is anything but simple. If they truly want to rebuild this backline, how much are they willing to compromise – on philosophy, on price, and on patience?
